Systematic investigations into the impact of haemorheological parameters through ionizing rays are not available in literature. The main factors influencing the flow capacity of the blood were determined in vitro by using a set of special methods. Even by using high dosages of irradiation (600 R) only those changes in the flow capacity of the blood could be identified which lay in or near the dispersion area of the methods.

465 male seamen of the GDR's Deep-Sea Fishery (about 10%) had stomatologically been examined at the open sea on board of various cargo-ships. The DMF-T index, the distribution of kinds of fillers, the proportion of primary and secondary caries, the number of teeth being missed, the distribution of Eichner classes and the mode and frequency of dentures had been analysed. The quantity and quality of the stomatological care in deep-sea fishers depends on numerous factors of influence, not at least on the stomatological care preceding their first employment aboard.

In psychoanalytic literature it is asserted that in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) the period prior to the infarction is characterized by denial of resentment, dependency, anxiety and vital exhaustion. AMI patients overcompensate these characteristics by means of aggressive and active behavior. In the present study an instrument was constructed to measure these defense mechanisms.

Cultured arterial smooth muscle cells incorporate [35S]sulfate into the extracellular chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate containing proteoglycans at a higher rate in the phase of logarithmic growth than do non-dividing cells. The cell growth-dependent decrease in 35S incorporation with increasing cell density is accompanied by a decrease in the activity of chondroitin sulfate-synthesizing enzymes. The specific activity of xylosyl transferase, N-acetylgalactosaminyl transferase I and chondroitin sulfotransferase declines as the cells proceed from low to high densities.

To evaluate phase II intensive monitored cardiac rehabilitation using a 6-level, 6-session protocol, 31 patients were placed in a progressive 6-level exercise protocol with careful supervision and assessment of heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure and perceived exertion. Duration after the cardiac event ranged from 12 days to 8 years (median 10 months). Each exercise prescription was based on exercise testing with oxygen consumption determinations.

Bone scan is an essential method of investigation for the detection of metastases; it is also used to follow the evolution of the disease and the response to treatment in prostatic cancer. The authors tried a bone scan quantification method to better evaluate the efficiency of hormonal treatment. 28 patients were followed up by this method.

To evaluate the usefulness of telephonically-monitored home exercise in patients within two weeks postcoronary bypass surgery, we randomly enrolled 46 male patients in a 12-week home program of either short walks or bicycle ergometry. Home exercise was done five times weekly and monitored both before and immediately after three times weekly. New arrhythmias or conduction disturbances were detected in 18 of 23 (78 percent) of the bicycle group and in 20 of 23 (87 percent) of the short walk patients.

An extensive survey of erythrocytes of marsupials other than kangaroos for electrophoretic variation if X-linked enzymes revealed two rare PGK-A phenotypes in the phalangerid Trichosurus vupecula and one in Trichosurus caninus. Four putatively heterozygous females expressed only the variant allelic isozyme in some tissues but expressed a trace of the normal isozyme in others. A putatively hemizygous male expressed only the variant isozyme in all tissues.

Isolation for nosocomial or community-acquired infection can be a bewildering and potentially stressful situation for the hospitalized patient and his family. Proper education is essential in order to minimize these fears and provide optimal medical care. A booklet has been designed to supplement the verbal explanations that should be given by hospital staff about the rationale and details of the isolation procedures.

One single intramuscular injection of hydropyrogesteroncapronate was given in an experiment to 199 gilts and 239 old sows on the 13th or 15th or 17th day after insemination to test various fertility performance parameters. Doses were 50 mg, 75 mg or 100 mg. Positive effects on litter size were established from the majority of nine compared experimental variants.

Commercially available lots of plasma derivatives prepared between 1957 and 1975 were tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) by radioimmunoassay. In all, 69 per cent of lots of plasma protein fraction, 40 per cent of factor IX concentrate, 20 per cent of normal serum albumin, 13 per cent of antihemophilic factor, 3 per cent of fibrinogen, and 0.7 per cent of immune serum globulin lots tested were HBsAg-positive.

A collection of 1,985 lots of normal serum albumin (NSA) and 1,361 lots of plasma protein fraction (PPF) prepared between 1958 and 1974 were tested for the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Twenty-one percent of NSA lots and 71 per cent of PPF lots were HBsAg-positive by radioimmunoassay. There was considerable variation in frequency of HBsAg-positive lots among the 17 different manufacturers of NSA and the six manufacturers of PPF.
