Synbiotic effects of Lactobacillus plantarum CMT1 and Morinda citrifolia on the growth performance and disease resistance of whiteleg shrimp.

This study assesses the effects of a prebiotic derived from Morinda citrifolia (noni fruit) extract and a probiotic of Lactobacillus plantarum CMT1 alone and in combination on the survival, growth performance, digestive enzymes, and disease resistance of whiteleg shrimp. A total of 1200 juvenile shrimp were randomly allocated to four treatments: control (not supplemented with noni fruit extract or L. plantarum CMT1), Treatment 1 (TRT1) (supplemented with 1 % noni fruit extract), Treatment 2 (TRT2) (supplemented with 10 CFU/kg L.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Asia: Physician and Patient Perspectives on Surveillance, Diagnosis, and Treatment.

Purpose: In several Asian countries, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer deaths. HCC risk factors in Asia differ from those elsewhere and are changing with the treatment landscape as systemic treatment options increase. This study was conducted to gain insight from physicians and patients into HCC screening, diagnosis, and treatment strategies in Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Smoking Cessation, Quit Attempts and Predictive Factors among Vietnamese Adults in 2020.

Objective: This study aims to describe the updated smoking cessation and quit attempt rates and associated factors among Vietnamese adults in 2020.

Methods: Data on tobacco use among adults in Vietnam in 2020 was derived from the Provincial Global Adult Tobacco Survey. The participants in the study were people aged 15 and older.

Low-Grade Inflammation in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Its Correlation with Maternal Insulin Resistance and Fetal Growth Indices.

Introduction: Chronic low-grade inflammation (LGI) plays a role in the pathogenesis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). LGI, on the one hand, promotes insulin resistance and at the same time, affects fetal development. The study aimed to use clinically feasible means to evaluate the association between maternal LGI and maternal insulin resistance and fetal growth indices by ultrasound in the third trimester.

Relationship Between Maternal Serum Cortisol and Maternal Insulin Resistance and Fetal Ultrasound Characteristics in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

Introduction: Cortisol is proven to play a crucial role in hyperglycemia and fetal development in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This research aims to investigate the relationship between maternal serum cortisol and insulin resistance indices and fetal ultrasound characteristics in women with GDM.

Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive study on 144 GDM in Vietnam from January 2015 to December 2020.

Lower Plasma Albumin, Higher White Blood Cell Count and High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein are Associated with Femoral Artery Intima-Media Thickness Among Newly Diagnosed Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Introduction: Low albumin levels, high levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and high white blood cell count were risk factors for changes in arterial intima-media thickness (IMT). Femoral artery IMT damages were one of the common peripheral artery type 2 diabetes. This study was conducted to determine the association between femoral artery IMT and plasma albumin, hs-CRP levels, and white blood cell count in newly diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (nT2D).

Violence and non-fatal injuries among Vietnamese in-school adolescents: national prevalence estimates and associated factors.

School violence and injury are major public health problems worldwide. The data of this study were from the Viet Nam Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) - a nationally representative survey conducted in 2019, with a sample size of 7690 students aged 13-17 years old. We found the prevalence of violence and non-fatal injury to be 14.

Optical Properties of Doxorubicin Hydrochloride Load and Release on Silica Nanoparticle Platform.

Silica nanoparticles (SiO NPs) synthesized by the Stober method were used as drug delivery vehicles. Doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX·HCl) is a chemo-drug absorbed onto the SiO NPs surfaces. The DOX·HCl loading onto and release from the SiO NPs was monitored via UV-VIS and fluorescence spectra.

Graphene Oxide/Polyvinyl Alcohol/FeO Nanocomposite: An Efficient Adsorbent for Co(II) Ion Removal.

In this work, an effective nanocomposite-based adsorbent directed to adsorb cobalt (Co) ion was successfully synthesized from graphene oxide (GO), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and magnetite (FeO) nanoparticles via a coprecipitation technique. The synthesized GO/PVA/FeO nanocomposite was applied for Co ion removal with the optimized working conditions including 100 min of contact time, 0.01 g of adsorbent dosage, pH of 5.

Describing the pattern of the COVID-19 epidemic in Vietnam.

Given the rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and the huge negative impacts it is causing, researching on COVID-19-related issues is very important for designing proactive and comprehensive public health interventions to fight against the pandemic. We describe the characteristics of COVID-19 patients detected in the two phases of the epidemic in Vietnam. Data used in this paper were mainly obtained from the official database of the Ministry of Health of Vietnam.

Genetic diversity of leafy amaranth ( L.) resources in Vietnam.

Leafy amaranths, which are consumed as traditional food in Asia and Africa, are now considered among the most promising vegetables. In Vietnam, leafy amaranths, particularly L., are important summer vegetables due to their excellent nutritional values and high tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses.

Attitudes Toward Aging Among Patients With Upper Extremity Illness.

An adaptive attitude toward aging might limit symptom intensity and magnitude of limitations. This study sought factors associated with attitudes toward aging (measured with the Brief Aging Perceptions Questionnaire [B-APQ]) and studied the relationship of having an age-related disease to magnitude of limitations, pain intensity, patient satisfaction, and patient comfort with completing a questionnaire about attitudes toward aging. We also looked for a subset of questions from B-APQ that maintained the construct validity and internal consistency of B-APQ, without unacceptable flooring or ceiling effects.

Certification and stability assessment of recombinant human growth hormone as a certified reference material for protein quantification.

A certified reference material (CRM) for the quantification of protein, essential to manage quality control and quality assurance in protein-related works, has been developed. Amino acid analysis with conventional acid hydrolysis and isotope dilution HPLC-MS was used to establish an SI-traceable absolute protein quantification method using recombinant human growth hormone (hGH) as a model protein. The certification method was verified by comparative studies between 1) different methods of protein quantification based on microwave-assisted hydrolysis, and 2) different labs as part of the Asian Collaboration on Reference Material project with Japan, China, and Korea.

Background: In general, journals can be divided in three categories: subscription-model, open-access, and hybrid (that is, open-access by choice). One measure of an article's impact is the number of citations it receives after publication. Open-access publishing may make articles more widely available because there is no financial barrier to a reader seeing the full-text version.

Variation of Mitochondrial DNA HV1 AND HV2 of the Vietnamese Population.

Background: The sequence polymorphism of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) hypervariable segment 1 (HV1) and hypervariable segment 2 (HV2) is studied and applied to genetic diversity and human evolution assessment, forensic genetics, consanguinity determination, and mitochondrial disease diagnosis.

Methods: The study identified the variations of HV1 and HV2 of 517 unrelated Vietnamese individuals in Kinh, Muong, Cham, and Khmer ethnic. We performed sequencing of two hypervariable segments of mitochondrial DNA: HV1 and HV2.

Do Patients Unconsciously Associate Suggestions for More-invasive Treatment with Better Care?

Background: It seems common for patients to conceive of care in physical terms, such as medications, injections, and procedures rather than advice and support. Clinicians often encounter patients who seem to prefer more testing or invasive treatments than expertise supports. We wanted to determine whether patients unconsciously associate suggestions for invasive treatments with better care.

A genome-wide association study using a Vietnamese landrace panel of rice (Oryza sativa) reveals new QTLs controlling panicle morphological traits.

Context: Yield improvement is an important issue for rice breeding. Panicle architecture is one of the key components of rice yield and exhibits a large diversity. To identify the morphological and genetic determinants of panicle architecture, we performed a detailed phenotypic analysis and a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using an original panel of Vietnamese landraces.

Background: Regular physical activity (PA) has documented effects in prevention and treatment of many non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Physical inactivity is recognized as the fourth leading risk factor for premature death, worldwide. Fully international system of units-traceable glycated hemoglobin quantification using two stages of isotope-dilution high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Glycated hemoglobin (HbA), defined as hemoglobin (Hb) molecules having a stable adduct of glucose on the N-terminal of the β-chains, has been endorsed as a diagnostic tool for diabetes mellitus and a prediction indicator for the development of diabetes complications. Here we describe an accurate procedure using two stages of isotope dilution-ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC-MS/MS) for the quantification of HbA that provides full traceability to International System of Units (SI). First, synthetic peptides representing specific markers of HbA (G-hexa) and hemoglobin A (Hexa) were certified by amino acid analysis via acid hydrolysis as reference materials (RMs) for the next step.

A reference measurement procedure for amino acids in blood using isotope dilution ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

We described a reference measurement procedure for amino acid (AA) quantification in blood samples based on deproteinization with 5-sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) and an isotope dilution-ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method. The serum was deproteinized with 15% v/v SSA and the supernatant was injected directly into the LC-MS system without further processing. Compared with the use of other precipitants and water as a control, five model AAs-valine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, and phenylalanine-in the SSA-treated samples showed ionization enhancement as well as stable background signals without significant ion suppression effects.

Risk factors for HIV infection in a gynaeco-obstetric population in Vietnam--a case-control study.

Background: Vietnam has an emerging HIV epidemic, particularly in male drug injectors. Data on HIV infections in women in the general population, and their risk factors, are scanty.

Methods: A case-control study was performed in a large gynaeco-obstetric hospital in Haiphong city in 1998-2001.

HIV-1 CRF01_AE in intravenous drug users in Hanoi, Vietnam.

To investigate the molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 among intravenous drug users (IDUs) in Hanoi we collected 17 samples from individuals living in 12 locations in and around Hanoi. The HIV-1 env V3 and gag p17 regions were directly sequenced from the proviral PBMC population. The majority of the IDUs were infected with HIV-1 CRF01_AE and one individual carried a p17/V3 CRF01/subtype C recombinant.
