Preoperative B-Type Natriuretic Peptides to Predict Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation in Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Post-operative atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common complication following cardiac surgery. There has been extensive exploration of clinical variables, imaging, and biomarkers to predict its occurrence after cardiac surgery. In this study, we examine the emerging biomarkers B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal proBNP (NT-proBNP) to assess their pre-operative values and correlations with the occurrence of post-operative AF in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Efficacy of chest X-rays after drain removal in adult and pediatric patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgery: A systematic review.

Background: Chest X-rays are routinely obtained after the removal of chest drains in patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures. However, a lack of guidelines and evidence could question the practice. Routine chest X-rays increase exposure to ionizing radiation, increase health-care costs, and lead to overutilisation of available resources.

PmrB mutations including a novel 10-amino acid repeat sequence insertion associated with low-level colistin resistance in carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii.

The global emergence of colistin resistance in carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) clinical isolates is a serious public health concern. We therefore aimed to investigate colistin resistance mechanisms in 5 colistin-resistant (COL-R) CRAB isolates collected from Thai patients in 2016 by whole genome sequencing (WGS) compared with those of 5 colistin-intermediate (COL-I) CRAB isolates from the same period. All isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing, efflux pump inhibitor-based test and WGS.

Colistin heteroresistance in carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates from a Thai university hospital.

Colistin is the last resort for the treatment of infections with carbapenem-resistant (CR) Gram-negative bacteria particularly Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB). Currently, both colistin-resistant and -heteroresistant A. baumannii isolates have been reported globally.

Molecular characterization of Staphylococcus argenteus in Myanmar: identification of novel genotypes/clusters in staphylocoagulase, protein A, alpha-haemolysin and other virulence factors.

Purpose: Staphylococcus argenteus is a novel emerging species of coagulase-positive staphylococcus that is genetically closely related to Staphylococcus aureus. To elucidate the molecular differences in the virulence factors (staphylocoagulase, protein A, alpha-haemolysin, enterotoxin-like toxin and staphylokinase) between these staphylococcal species, S. argenteus that had recently been isolated in Myanmar (five nasal isolates and four clinical isolates) were analysed.

Specific patterns of genetic diversity among aromatic rice varieties in Myanmar.

Background: After observing peculiar rice varieties in Myanmar, in terms of classification in varietal groups and of grain quality, we focused on Myanmar varieties and analyzed variations at 19 microsatellite loci as well as sequences of the aroma gene BADH2.

Results: Microsatellites were able to retrieve the well-established classification into Indica (isozyme group 1), Japonica (group 6, comprising temperate and tropical forms) and specific groups from the Himalayan foothills including some Aus varieties (group 2) and some aromatic varieties (group 5). They revealed a new cluster of accessions close to, but distinct from, non-Myanmar varieties in group 5.

Community awareness and perceptions of health sector preparedness and response to Cyclone Nargis.

Community awareness, preparedness and response to public health emergencies are essential for a successful response to public health emergencies. This study was carried out to determine community awareness and perceptions regarding health sector preparedness and response to Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar. Six focus group discussions were carried out in 3 villages severely affected by Cyclone Nargis.

Pyramiding transgenes for multiple resistance in rice against bacterial blight, yellow stem borer and sheath blight.

Here we describe the development of transgene-pyramided stable elite rice lines resistant to disease and insect pests by conventional crossing of two transgenic parental lines transformed independently with different genes. The Xa21 gene (resistance to bacterial blight), the Bt fusion gene (for insect resistance) and the chitinase gene (for tolerance of sheath blight) were combined in a single rice line by reciprocal crossing of two transgenic homozygous IR72 lines. F4 plant lines carrying all the genes of interest stably were identified using molecular methods.
