Postpartum care attendance at a rural district hospital in Zambia.

Postpartum care is an important tool in both preventive and promotive maternal health care. We studied the postpartum care attendance rate in 540 women who delivered at a district hospital in Zambia. Forty-two percent of the women attended postpartum care within six weeks of delivery.

Health problems after childbirth have received little attention compared to maternal morbidity in the antenatal period and during labour. We conducted a hospital-based study to investigate postpartum health problems in rural Zambian women. Health problems are very common: 84% of the 620 study participants reported at least one health problem.
