Acute coronary syndrome.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a major health care and economic burden in the United States and accounts for more than 1 million hospitalizations annually. The morbidity and mortality due to ACS are substantial-nearly half of all deaths due to coronary heart disease occur following an ACS. This review provides an up-to-date summary of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of ACS.

Malignant pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade in ovarian adenocarcinoma.

Background: Malignant pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade is an uncommon metastatic manifestation of gynecologic cancers. We describe a patient with ovarian cancer who developed pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade and was successfully treated with pericardiocentesis and intrapericardial instillation of thiotepa.

Case: A 52-year-old woman with stage IV ovarian adenocarcinoma presented with worsening cough, dyspnea, and fatigue.

Effects of vessel geometry and catheter position on dose delivery in intracoronary brachytherapy.

In-stent restenosis is commonly observed in coronary arteries after intervention. Intravascular brachytherapy has been found effective in reducing the recurrence of restenosis after stent placement. Conventional dosing models for brachytherapy with beta (beta) radiation neglect vessel geometry as well as the position of the delivery catheter.
