Erythropoietin and sildenafil protect against ischemia/reperfusion injury following testicular torsion in adult rats.

Testicular torsion/detorsion causes severe tissue damage due to ischemia/reperfusion injury. The present study investigated the protective effect of erythropoietin and sildenafil against ischemia/reperfusion injury following unilateral testicular torsion/detorsion in adult rats. A total of 28 adult male rats were included, and were divided into the following groups: Group A (n=5), sham operated; groups B (n=5), C (n=5), D (n=5) and E (n=8), undergoing right testis torsion and detorsion after 90 min.

Introduction: Evidence suggests that any interruptions, including those of rescue breaths, during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) have significant, detrimental effects on survival. The 2010 International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation guidelines strongly emphasized on the importance of minimizing interruptions during chest compressions. However, those guidelines also stress the need for ventilations in the case of prolonged cardiac arrest (CA), and it is not at present clear at which point of CA the necessity of providing ventilations overcomes the hemodynamic compromise caused by chest compressions' interruption.

Nursing role in monitoring during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and in the peri-arrest period: a review.

Objective: The study objective was to present a comprehensive literature review on the monitoring of patients with cardiac arrest (CA) and the nursing contribution in this crucial situation. Monitoring techniques during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and in the peri-arrest period (just before or after CA) are included.

Methods: Approaches used to access the research studies included a comprehensive search in relevant electronic databases (Medline, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane Review, British Nursing Index) using relevant keywords (eg, cardiac arrest, resuscitation, monitoring, nurse, survival, outcome).

Background: The role of combination chemotherapy regimens in the management of ovarian cancer patients with tumors previously exposed to platinum compounds and paclitaxel has not yet been defined. The present phase II study evaluated the activity and toxicity of a gemcitabine-ifosfamide-cisplatin combination in the aforementioned group of patients. Given the in vitro and in vivo synergism between the three agents, it was believed that using a three-drug combination would overcome tumor resistance to cisplatin.

Torsion of undescended testis in a man with Down's syndrome.

Undescended testis is one of the most common disorders in Down's syndrome. We present an extremely rare case of torsion of an inguinal undescended testis in a 35-year-old patient with Down's syndrome. Surgical exploration revealed a rotated gangrenous testis, radical orchiectomy was performed, and pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of testicular torsion.
