Purpose: To describe the types and age differences of surgical strabismus.

Methods: Records of 4,886 strabismus patients who underwent surgery at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 1982 to 1996 were analyzed. Demographic and clinical data were collected from all patients as a retrospective case series.

Glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) are often used in refractory cases of pediatric glaucoma. Traditionally, sutures are used during GDD implantation for securing the plate and silicone tube to the sclera, for suturing a patch graft over the silicone tube, and for conjunctival closure. The use of fibrin glue as an alternative to standard suturing techniques has been studied in adults but not in the pediatric population.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a common infection that occasionally presents with destructive lesions. Two of the most feared presentations of HSV are encephalitis and acute retinal necrosis. Although there are numerous reports of acute retinal necrosis presenting after HSV-2 infection in children, it has been rarely reported in children after HSV-1 infection.

A 34-year-old man presented to the ophthalmology clinic because of an enlarging mass of the left bulbar conjunctiva, found to be Kaposi sarcoma by histologic examination. The patient had no prior diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus infection, making this one of only two descriptions in the literature of conjunctival Kaposi sarcoma as the initial presentation of human immunodeficiency virus infection. With surgical resection and highly active antiretroviral therapy, the prognosis is good.
