This double-blind, randomized, multi-center study compared the metabolic tolerance of a combined formulation containing estradiol (E2) and trimegestone (TMG) with a standard hormone replacement therapy (HRT) containing estradiol valerate (EV) and norgestrel (NG). Blood lipids, glucose and fibrinogen concentrations were measured in the study which was conducted over 13 cycles, each of 28 days, and included 634 subjects in two randomized groups. A total of 481 subjects completed the study.

However, the role of angiogenesis in hematologic malignancies was only recently appreciated. We show that HTLV-I-transformed T cells, but not HTLV-I-negative CD4(+) T cells, secrete biologically active forms of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and, accordingly, induce angiogenesis in vitro.

Among KSHV-infected individuals, the risk of KS is much higher in those with human immunodeficiency-1 (HIV-1) infection than among those with other types of immunosuppression, suggesting a direct action of HIV-1 on KSHV replication. We show in our report that BC-3 cells, a chronically KSHV-infected B-cell line of a PEL origin, are permissive to HIV-1, offering a new tool for studying the interactions between these 2 viruses.

The two therapeutic agents, retinoic acid and arsenic, that induce clinical remissions in APL, both target the oncogenic fusion protein, representing the first example of oncogene-directed cancer therapy. This review focuses on the molecular mechanisms accounting for PML/RARalpha degradation.

Methods: A total of 120 Dutch outpatients with AS were randomly allocated into 3 groups of 40 patients each. Group 1 (mean age 48 +/- 10 years; male:female ratio 25:15) was treated in a spa resort in Bad Hofgastein, Austria; group 2 (mean age 49 +/- 9 years; male:female ratio 28:12) in a spa resort in Arcen, The Netherlands.
Solid tumors are composed not only of tumor cells but also of stromal nonneoplastic cells. In whole tumor samples, stromal cells retaining their alleles may therefore obscure detection of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in tumor cells. An increasing number of studies have used laser-assisted tissue microdissection to improve LOH detection, but the real gain in sensitivity has been poorly quantified.

The number and the intensity of PML NBs increase in response to interferon (IFN). Overexpression of PML affects the replication of vesicular stomatitis virus and influenza virus.

While arsenic trioxide (As) inhibits the growth and induces apoptosis in HTLV-I-infected T cells, synergistically, when combined with interferon-alpha, variable effects on growth with all trans retinoic acid treatment have been reported in ATL-derived cell lines and fresh ATL cells. In this study, we investigate the effects of ATRA alone or in combination with As in HTLV-I-transformed cells.

In acute promyelocytic leukemia, PML/retinoic acid receptor (RAR) alpha expression disrupts NBs, but therapies such as retinoic acid or arsenic trioxide (As2O3) restore them. PML is conjugated by the ubiquitin-related peptide SUMO-1, a process enhanced by As2O3 and proposed to target PML to the nuclear matrix.

Methods: After written informed consent was obtained, 27 rheumatologists (21% of all Dutch rheumatologists) practicing in 16 outpatient departments were each visited by 8 incognito "standardized patients" (SPs). The diagnoses of these 8 cases account for about 23% of all new referred patients in the Netherlands.
Retroviral Gag expression is sufficient for capsid assembly, which occurs through interaction between distinct Gag domains. Human foamy virus (HFV) capsids assemble within the cytoplasm, although their budding, which mainly occurs in the endoplasmic reticulum, requires the presence of homologous Env. Yet little is known about the molecular basis of HFV Gag precursor assembly.

Following a serious allegation in late 1997, INSERM, the primary organization for medical and health-related research in France, began to reflect on this subject, aided by scientists and jurists. The conclusions have resulted in establishing a procedure to be followed in cases of alleged misconduct, and also in reinforcing the application of good laboratory practices within each laboratory.

PML localizes onto discrete intranuclear domains, the PML-nuclear bodies, and displays anti-oncogenic and pro-apoptotic properties. PLZF encodes a transcription factor belonging to the POZ/domain and Krüppel zinc finger (POK) family which interacts directly with PML.

Sixty-five 'blind' consensus biopsies (23 CIN 1, 22 CIN 2, and 20 CIN 3) were used as a learning set. Measurements were done in the carefully selected most severely dysplastic part of the epithelium of each CIN case.

Here, we report the isolation and characterization of a new FV isolated from blood samples of horses. Similar to other FVs, the equine foamy virus (EFV) exhibits a highly characteristic ultrastructure and induces syncytium formation and subsequent cell lysis on a large number of cell lines.

Background: A change in number and/or activity of natural killer cells has repeatedly been reported in depressive illness. Much less attention has yet been given to the subgroup of natural killer cells that are positive for the T-cell marker CD3 (NK-T cells). These cells possibly have important immunoregulatory properties.

The viral transactivator protein Tax plays a critical role in HTLV-I-induced transformation and apoptosis resistance by inducing I kappa B-alpha degradation, resulting in the activation of the NF-kappa Bpathway. In these HTLV-I-transformed cells, arsenic trioxide (As) and interferon (IFN)-alpha synergize to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis.

We show that, in F9 cells and in transfected COS-1 cells, the nuclear retinoid receptors, retinoic acid receptor gamma2 (RARgamma2), RARalpha1, and retinoid X receptor alpha1 (RXRalpha1) are degraded in a retinoic acid-dependent manner through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. The degradation of RARgamma2 is entirely dependent on its phosphorylation and on its heterodimerization with liganded RXRalpha1.

Objective: To assess the contraceptive reliability, cycle control and tolerability of a new monophasic oral contraceptive containing 30 g ethinylestradiol plus 3 mg drospirenone (Yasmin, Schering AG, Berlin, Germany), it was compared with an established oral contraceptive containing 30 g ethinylestradiol plus 150 g desogestrel (Marvelon, NV Organon, Oss, The Netherlands).
Methods: A randomized, open-label, 13-cycle study was performed at 80 European centers. Contraceptive reliability, cycle control, blood pressure, body weight, the incidence of adverse events and skin condition were assessed during 13 cycles of oral contraceptive use, and at follow-up.
Herpes simplex virus(HSV) serodiagnosis concerns type-common diagnosis and type-specific diagnosis. Primary HSV infections can be diagnosed by type-common serological assays, and in the ideal case, in combination with virus isolation. HSV type 1 and HSV type 2 are very similar except for glycoprotein G(gG).
