Bilaterally fixed and dilated pupils (BFDP) in traumatic acute subdural haematoma (ASDH) patients represent an ominous sign that portends irreversible brainstem injury and death. Whether patients with spontaneous ASDH and BFDP follow similar outcomes is unknown. We present a mid-60s man, found unconscious, with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 4 following 8 days of headaches.

Water safety plans for water supply utilities in China, Cuba, France, Morocco and Spain: costs, benefits, and enabling environment elements.

Water Safety Plans (WSPs) are a management tool to identify and prioritize risks and implement appropriate control measures throughout the water supply chain, from catchment to consumer. WSPs have been implemented in over 90 countries; yet, costs, benefits and the enabling environment elements necessary for WSP implementation are under-studied. To better understand these factors, we conducted interviews with WSP implementation management teams from 20 private urban water utilities in China, Cuba, France, Morocco and Spain in 2014.

Sound and its reception are crucial for reproduction, survival, and population maintenance of many animals. In insects, low-frequency vibrations facilitate sexual interactions, whereas noise disrupts the perception of signals from conspecifics and hosts. Despite evidence that mosquitoes respond to sound frequencies beyond fundamental ranges, including songs, and that males and females need to struggle to harmonize their flight tones, the behavioral impacts of music as control targets remain unexplored.

Drinking water, diet, indoor air: Comparison of the contribution to environmental micropollutants exposure.

This study collated 254,441 analytical results from drinking water quality monitoring in order to compare levels of exposure of the French adult population from drinking water with that from total diet for 37 pesticides, 11 mineral elements, 11 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), 6 non dioxin-like polychlorobiphenyls (NDL PCB), 5 ether polybromodiphenyl ethers (BDE), 2 perfluorinated compounds. It also compares levels of exposure from drinking water with that from inhalation of indoor air for 9 volatile organic compounds (VOC) and 3 phthalates. The vast majority of the water analysis results showed values below the limits of quantification and this comparison was primarily made on the basis of a highly pessimistic scenario consisting in considering the data below the limits of quantification as being equal to the limits of quantification.

Synthesis of new simplified hemiasterlin derivatives with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl moiety.

In this Letter, we report a convenient and efficient method for the synthesis of new simplified derivatives of hemiasterlin in which the α,α-dimethylbenzylic moiety A is replaced by α,β-unsaturated aryl groups as Michael acceptor. Most of these derivatives have a strong cytotoxic activity on three human tumor cell lines (KB, Hep-G2 and MCF7). Analogs 17b and 17f showed a high cytotoxicity against KB and Hep-G2 cancer cell lines comparable to paclitaxel and ellipticine.

Dengue infection in children and adolescents: clinical profile in a reference hospital in northeast Brazil.

Introduction: This study aimed to describe the clinical spectrum of dengue in children and adolescents from a hyperendemic region who were admitted for hospitalization.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients diagnosed with dengue infection upon admission to a reference center in Fortaleza, Brazil.

Results: Of the 84 patients included, 42 underwent confirmatory testing.

[CONSORT for reporting randomized controlled trials in journal and conference abstracts: explanation and elaboration].

Background: Clear, transparent, and sufficiently detailed abstracts of conferences and journal articles related to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are important, because readers often base their assessment of a trial solely on information in the abstract. Here, we extend the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) Statement to develop a minimum list of essential items, which authors should consider when reporting the results of a RCT in any journal or conference abstract.

Methods And Findings: We generated a list of items from existing quality assessment tools and empirical evidence.

Grouping of tropical mid-altitude maize inbred lines on the basis of yield data and molecular markers.

The classification of maize inbred lines into heterotic groups is an important undertaking in hybrid breeding. The objectives of our research were to: (1) separate selected tropical mid-altitude maize inbred lines into heterotic groups based on grain yield data; (2) assess the genetic relationships among these inbred lines using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers; (3) examine the consistency between yield-based and marker-based groupings of the inbred lines. Thirty-eight tropical mid-altitude maize inbred lines were crossed to two inbred line testers representing the flint and dent heterotic pattern, respectively.

Synthesis and initial results for MAO-B inhibition by new N-propargyl-3-pyrrol-1-ylindanamine derivatives, analogues of rasagiline.

The syntthesis of new N-propargyl-3-pyrrol-1-ylindanamine derivatives, analogues of rasagiline, is described in ten steps starting from the corresponding arylaldehydes via the corresponding cis-3-pyrrol-1-ylindanamines. The cis-configuration of some intermediates has been established using X-ray analysis and NOE experiments. The new N-propargyl-3-pyrrol-1-ylindanamine derivatives were evaluated for their potential MAO-B inhibitor activity in an in vivo model of MPTP-induced Parkinsonism in mice with respect to the potent MAO-B inhibitor rasagiline.
