The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of the activity of lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), the enzyme responsible for esterification of cholesterol in plasma, as a predictor of retained placenta (RP) in close-up cows, compared with the non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentration. This study was conducted as a case-control study between February 2010 and February 2016, on a single farm with approximately 200 Holstein parous cows in Hokkaido, Japan. Of the 1187 dairy cattle that calved, 835 dairy cattle were enrolled that underwent routine regular health examinations including blood sampling, body condition score (BCS) and the rumen fill score (RFS) at the close-up stage between 2 and 21 days before their expected calving dates.

This review article describes the roles of ultrasound in assessing thoracic and abdominal infectious diseases, mainly bacterial and parasitic ones that affect farm animals, including cattle, camels, sheep, and goats. Ultrasonography is a non-invasive imaging technique used to diagnose infectious diseases affecting the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and hepatobiliary systems. In cases of thoracic and abdominal infections, ultrasound typically reveals abnormalities in echogenicity and echotexture, the presence of unusual artifacts, and mass formation exerting pressure on surrounding structures.

Article Synopsis
  • Enucleation and exenteration are common eye surgeries in veterinary medicine, specifically in camels, and this study introduces a new surgical method using the supraorbital fossa approach.
  • Seven camels underwent this technique at King-Faisal Teaching Veterinary Hospital, where the procedure involved sedation, a specific incision, and careful dissection to remove the eye while managing bleeding effectively.
  • The results indicated that the new approach was successful, with a mean surgery time of about 46.6 minutes and few complications, suggesting it is a safe and effective option for camel eye surgery, but further research is needed for wider application.

Article Synopsis
  • - Abdominal fat necrosis in camels often appears incidentally during exams, presenting as hard masses; the differential diagnosis can include other serious conditions like tumors.
  • - A 7-year-old female dromedary camel experienced weakness and weight loss, leading to various treatments that were ineffective until advanced diagnostic methods were used, revealing multiple masses and other abnormalities.
  • - Transabdominal ultrasonography proved essential for identifying potential abdominal masses and facilitating biopsy, but histopathological analysis ultimately confirmed the diagnosis of abdominal fat necrosis and associated conditions.

The transition period (TP), which extends from 3 weeks before 3 weeks post parturition, is a critical period regarding the health, productivity, and profitability of dairy animals, during which most health disorders arise, including lameness, mastitis, rumen acidosis, ketosis, hypocalcemia (HC) (milk fever), left-displaced abomasum, fatty liver, hypophosphatemia and post-parturient hemoglobinuria, subacute ruminal acidosis, RP, and metritis. Biomarkers are biological molecules distributed in blood, body fluids, or tissues that represent physiological or pathophysiological indicators of events, processes, or conditions happening within the animal's body. In the field of veterinary medicine, biomarkers are thought to have enormous valuable potential in the field of clinical diagnosis, therapeutical research, surgery, and obstetrical outcome.
