In cervical cancer, loss of p53 or mutant non-functional p53 and hyperactivated mTOR/Akt pathway positively correlates to cancer progression. Urdamycin V isolated from OA293 is a recently isolated novel angucycline derivative that in the present study showcased induction of p53 independent apoptosis in both HPV (Human papillomavirus) positive and negative cervical cancer cell lines. Apoptosis induction was phosphorylation modulation in the cell growth regulating proteins along mTORC2/Akt/p38/Erk pathway.

This study is an integrated analysis of the transcriptome profile microRNA (miRNA) and its experimentally validated mRNA targets differentially expressed in the tumorigenic stem-like fraction of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We had previously reported the coexistence of multiple drug-resistant tumorigenic fractions, termed side population (SP1, SP2, and MP2), and a nontumorigenic fraction, termed main population (MP1), in oral cancer. These fractions displayed a self-renewal, regenerative potential and expressed known stemness-related cell surface markers despite functional differences.

The main aim of the present work was to investigate the potential effect of acetone extract of Ficus religosa leaf (FAE) in multiple apoptosis signalling in human breast cancer cells. FAE treatment significantly induced dose and time dependent, irreversible inhibition of breast cancer cell growth with moderate toxicity to normal breast epithelial cells. This observation was validated using Sulforhodamine B assay.

Curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric (Curcuma longa) used in culinary and medical practices in Asia, has immense potential for being used in cancer chemotherapy because of its control over the cell growth regulatory mechanisms. The present chapter throws light on the role of curcumin in modulating the various phases of the cell cycle and its apoptosis-inducing effects. This is followed by a discussion on the implications of these effects of curcumin for its use as a chemotherapeutic agent in cancer.
