The spread of drug-resistant tuberculosis strains has become a significant economic burden globally. To tackle this challenge, there is a need to develop new drugs that target specific mycobacterial enzymes. Among these enzymes, InhA, which is crucial for the survival of , is a key target for drug development.

Background: The appendix is a small organ with no particular known function. Primary appendiceal neoplasms (ANs) are rare. While the prevalence is increasing worldwide over the past two decades, no apparent increase in the prevalence of ANs has been reported in the Arabian Gulf States.

Article Synopsis
  • Lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) is increasingly common and often leads to hospitalization, with varying clinical outcomes depending on factors like bleeding cause and management.
  • A study from May 2015 to December 2021 involved 84 patients who underwent emergency lower endoscopy, finding that rebleeding occurred in 6% of cases within 90 days and readmission was noted in 19%.
  • Key findings identified upper endoscopy, personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, and initial use of sigmoidoscopy as significant predictors for further interventions and readmissions, emphasizing the need for a coordinated management protocol.

There is a steady increase in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidences worldwide; at diagnosis, about 20 percent of cases show metastases. The transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) signaling pathway is one of the critical pathways that influence the expression of cadherins allowing the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which is involved in the progression of the normal colorectal epithelium to adenoma and metastatic carcinoma. The current study aimed to investigate the impact of a novel coordination complex of platinum (salicylaldiminato) PT(II) complex with dimethyl propylene linkage (PT-complex) on TGF-β and EMT markers involved in the invasion and migration of the human HT-29 and SW620 CRC cell lines.

Background: A considerable number of patients with colon cancer present with a colonic obstruction. The use of self-expanding metallic stents (SEMS) as a bridge to surgery (BTS) in potential curative patients with left-sided colonic cancer obstruction remains debatable. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the 5-year oncological outcomes of using a SEMS as a BTS.

Background: Crohn's disease (CD) is associated with malnutrition, an independent risk factor for surgical morbidity and mortality in more than 65% of patients, with a significant impact on disease outcomes. In this single-center retrospective cohort study, we aimed to investigate the impact of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) on the surgical outcomes of patients with CD.

Methods: This study included patients with CD who underwent abdominal surgery.

With >1.85 million cases and 850,000 deaths annually, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer detected globally. CRC is an aggressive malignancy with metastasis and, in spite of advances in improved treatment regimen, distant disease failure rates remain disappointingly high.

The heterogenous nature of colorectal cancer (CRC) highlights the need for a better understanding of the growth factors that affect tumour growth and cancer progression. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of epidermal growth factor (EGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in the early (I and II) and late (III and IV) stages of CRC. The serum levels and mRNA expression (n=30) of the aforementioned growth factors were measured and immunohistochemistry (n=20) was performed in patients with CRC.

Background: Obesity is a major global public health problem. Observational studies have shown an increasing incidence of syncope and pre-syncope following bariatric surgery in obese patients. However, there is paucity of the true incidence of syncope following bariatrics sugary in the literature.

In the current work, a new set of carbohydrazide linked benzofuran-isatin conjugates ( and ) was designed and synthesised. The anticancer activity for compounds (, and ) was measured against NCI-55 human cancer cell lines. Compound was the most efficient, and thus subjected to the five-dose screen where it showed excellent broad activity against almost all tested cancer subpanels.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common malignancy causing cancer‑related mortality globally. It is the third most common type of cancer detected worldwide. The recent concept of the human body supporting a diverse community of microbes has revealed the important role these microbes play synergistically in maintaining normal homeostasis.

Background: Self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) are used as a bridge to surgery for colon cancer patients as an alternative to emergency surgery. Currently, there is a paucity of literature from Saudi Arabia on the preoperative usage of SEMS.

Objective: Determine whether SEMS are associated with a higher rate of complications.

Background: Data on long-term survival and recurrence of cancer after complete mesocolic excision (CME) for colon cancer has not been reported from our center and related to international data.

Objective: Describe overall and disease-free survival, survival by surgery site and stage, and recurrence rates after curative surgery.

Design: Retrospective chart review.

Background: Many studies have shown that open and laparoscopicsurgery for resection of colonic cancers produce similar short- and long-term results, but no data have been reported from Saudi Arabia.

Objective: Compare 3-year disease-free and overall survival after laparoscopic versus open curative resection for potentially curable colon cancer.

Design: Multicenter retrospective cohort study.

Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is a common evolution of abdominal cancers. It may arise from the peritoneum itself (primary) or originate from another type of cancer especially those of gastrointestinal or gynecological origin (secondary). Without aggressive multimodal therapeutic approaches, PC is associated with a poor prognosis.

Background/aim: To elucidate colorectal cancer (CRC) disease patterns, demographics, characteristics, stage at presentation, metastases, and survival rates of patients, particularly those with liver metastases, at our center as the first report from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Patients And Methods: We performed a retrospective, single-center database study based on the histological diagnosis of CRC in patients seen at the King Khalid University Hospital between 2007 and 2011.

Results: 427 cases of CRC with a mean age at diagnosis of 55.

Background: There is little evidence for the use of early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (EPIC) in patients with low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). This study aims to assess the outcomes regarding the use of EPIC in a large cohort of patients with LAMNs with PMP uniformly treated by cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (PIC), all of whom received hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), and most of whom also received EPIC.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of prospectively collected data of consecutive patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis of appendiceal origin who underwent CRS and PIC by one surgical team at St George Hospital in Sydney, Australia, between January 1996 and November 2015.

Background: Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) is an effective treatment for peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) from multiple origins, however is associated with increased complications compared to conventional gastrointestinal surgery. The aetiology of enterocutaneous fistulas (ECF) in most cases is a result of various contributing factors and therefore remains a major clinical problem, occurring in 4-34% of patients post-CRS. The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence and outcome of ECF following CRS/HIPEC.

Air embolism is an uncommon but potentially catastrophic event that occurs when air enters the vasculature. Because of a scared and friable colorectal mucosa, patients with anastomotic stricture are at an increased risk of complications associated with sigmoidoscopy such as bowel perforation and bleeding. This is a report of fatal air embolism confirmed on an immediate postmortem chest radiograph in a patient with a high colorectal anastomotic stricture undergoing sigmoidoscopy under spinal anesthesia is reported.
