Biweekly oxaliplatin and irinotecan chemotherapy in advanced gastric cancer. A first-line multicenter phase II trial of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Medikamentöse Tumortherapie (AGMT).

Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of an outpatient oxaliplatin/irinotecan chemotherapy in chemonaive patients suffering from unresectable gastric cancer.

Materials And Methods: Biweekly oxaliplatin (85 mg/m2) and irinotecan (125 mg/m2) was chosen since it has been shown previously in colorectal cancer that oxaliplatin (85 mg/m2) is superior to a lower dose and toxicity of irinotecan is much lower if given fractionated. The irinotecan dose below the maximum tolerated dose takes into consideration concerns about increased toxicity in gastric cancer patients.

Cetuximab plus irinotecan in heavily pretreated metastatic colorectal cancer progressing on irinotecan: MABEL Study.

Purpose: This large, multinational study aimed to confirm in a community practice setting the efficacy and safety of cetuximab plus irinotecan in patients with epidermal growth factor-expressing metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) who had recently failed an irinotecan-containing regimen.

Patients And Methods: The primary objective was to determine the progression-free survival (PFS) rate at 12 weeks. The initial cetuximab dose was 400 mg/m(2) and was followed weekly by 250 mg/m(2); irinotecan (according to prestudy regimen) was given weekly (125 mg/m(2) weekly for 4 of 6 weeks), every 2 weeks (180 mg/m(2) each), or every 3 weeks (350 mg/m(2) each).

Non-episodic angioedema associated with eosinophilia following Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

Episodic angioedema with eosinophilia is characterized by recurrent angioedema, peripheral eosinophilia, fever, weight gain, elevated serum immunoglobulin M (IgM), and a benign course lacking any internal organ involvement. A non-episodic variant has also been reported which is limited to a single attack and normally is less severe than the episodic type. We report a case of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection with dermatological manifestation that was followed by non-episodic angioedema with eosinophilia including fever, weight gain, and elevated serum IgM.

The Austrian fulvestrant registry: results from a prospective observation of fulvestrant in postmenopausal patients with metastatic breast cancer.

Background: Endocrine therapy is the preferred treatment in oestrogen- and/or progesterone-receptor (ER/PgR) positive breast cancer. Fulvestrant is a pure ER-antagonist. We present results from the Austrian Fulvestrant Registry.

In the neurogenic phase of CNS development, the proliferating progenitors are found medially within the neuroepithelium. The adherens junctions on the apical membrane of proliferating neural progenitors allow for cell-cell adhesion and medial stratification. In contrast, differentiating neuronal precursors delaminate and migrate laterally, establishing the laminar layers.

A prospective randomised phase III trial of adjuvant chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin in patients with stage II colon cancer.

The purpose of this trial was to investigate the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin (LV) in stage II colon cancer. Patients with stage II colon cancer were randomised to either adjuvant chemotherapy with 5-FU/LV (100 mg m(-2) LV+450 mg m(-2) 5-FU weekly, weeks 1-6, in 8 weeks cycles x 7) or surveillance only. Five hundred patients were evaluable for analyses.

Portrayal of nursing to incoming students: results of a national survey of geriatric and pediatric web images on baccalaureate nursing program web sites.

In the face of a rapidly aging America and given that older adults are the population that avail health care services the most, there is a clear mandate to stimulate nursing student interest in care of older adults. The purpose of this study was to determine if web sites of baccalaureate nursing (BSN) programs stimulate interest in care of older adults by quantifying and comparing images of older adults and children on baccalaureate nursing program web sites and examining the characteristics of these images. The reality that nurses primarily care for older adults is not reflected in images on BSN program web sites.

Toll-like receptor-4 mediates vascular inflammation and insulin resistance in diet-induced obesity.

Vascular dysfunction is a major complication of metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity. The current studies were undertaken to determine whether inflammatory responses are activated in the vasculature of mice with diet-induced obesity, and if so, whether Toll-Like Receptor-4 (TLR4), a key mediator of innate immunity, contributes to these responses. Mice lacking TLR4 (TLR4(-/-)) and wild-type (WT) controls were fed either a low fat (LF) control diet or a diet high in saturated fat (HF) for 8 weeks.

Insect predators affect plant resistance via density- and trait-mediated indirect interactions.

Predators can affect herbivores both through direct consumption (density-mediated interactions) and by changing behavioural, physiological or morphological attributes of the prey (trait-mediated interactions). These effects on the herbivore can in turn affect the plant through density- and trait-mediated indirect interactions (DMIIs and TMIIs). While the effects of DMIIs and TMIIs imposed by predators has been shown to influence plant density and plant communities, we know little about the effects on plant quality.

Experimental limits on weak annihilation contributions to decays.

We present the first experimental limits on high-q2 contributions to charmless semileptonic decays of the form expected from the weak annihilation (WA) decay mechanism. Such contributions could bias determinations of /Vub/ from inclusive measurements of B-->Xulupsilon. Using a wide range of models based on available theoretical input we set a limit of GammaWA/Gammab-->u<7.

Plant-mediated interactions between pathogenic microorganisms and herbivorous arthropods.

Plant-mediated interactions between pathogenic microorganisms and arthropod herbivores occur when arthropod infestation or pathogen infection changes the shared host plant in ways that affect a subsequent attacker of the opposite type. Interest in such "tripartite" interactions has increased as the ecological and plant physiological framework for understanding and contextualizing them has developed. The outcomes of plant-mediated interactions are variable, and only a few provisional patterns can be identified at present.

Boat, an AXH domain protein, suppresses the cytotoxicity of mutant ataxin-1.

Ataxin-1 is a neurodegenerative disorder protein whose glutamine-repeat expanded form causes spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) in humans and exerts cytotoxicity in Drosophila and mouse. We report here that the cytotoxicity caused by ataxin-1 is modulated by association with a related protein, Brother of ataxin-1 (Boat). Boat and ataxin-1 share a conserved AXH (ataxin-1 and HMG-box protein 1) domain, which is essential for both proteins' interactions with the transcriptional corepressor SMRT and its Drosophila homolog, SMRTER.

Herbivore-induced plants responses can affect the preference and performance of herbivores and their natural enemies. These responses may vary depending on the identity and number of herbivore species feeding on the plant so that when herbivores from different guilds feed on plants, the interactions between plants, herbivores, and natural enemies may be disrupted. Tomato plants were damaged either by the caterpillar Spodoptera exigua, or the aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae, or damaged by both herbivores, or undamaged controls.

We report on a search for the recently reported X(3872) state using 15.1 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) data taken in the sqrt[s] = 9.46-11.

Photon transitions in Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) decays.

We have studied the inclusive photon spectra in Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) decays using a large statistics data sample obtained with the CLEO III detector. We present the most precise measurements of electric dipole (E1) photon transition rates and photon energies for Upsilon(2S) --> gammachi(bJ)(1P) and Upsilon(3S) --> gammachi(bJ)(2P) (J = 0, 1, 2). We measure the rate for a rare E1 transition Upsilon(3S) --> gammachi(b0)(1P) for the first time.

Observation of 1(-)0(-) final states from psi(2S) decays and e(+)e(-) annihilation.

Using CLEO data collected from CESR e(+)e(-) collisions at the psi(2S) resonance and nearby continuum at sqrt[s]=3.67 GeV, we report the first significantly nonzero measurements of light vector-pseudoscalar hadron pair production (including rhopi, omegapi, rhoeta, and K(*0)K0 ) and the pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) final state, both from psi(2S) decays and direct e(+)e(-) annihilation.

Study of the semileptonic charm decays D(0)-->pi(-)l(+)nu and D(0)-->K(-)l(+)nu.

We investigate the decays D(0)-->pi(-)l(+)nu and D(0)-->K(-)l(+)nu, where l is e or mu, using approximately 7 fb(-1) of data collected with the CLEO III detector. We find R(0) identical with B(D(0)-->pi(-)e(+)nu)/B(D(0)-->K(-)e(+)nu)=0.082+/-0.

Search for the lepton-flavor-violating leptonic B(0)-->mu(+/-)tau(-/+) and B(0)-->e(+/-)tau(-/+).

We have searched a sample of 9.6 x 10(6) BB events for the lepton-flavor-violating leptonic B decays, B(0)-->mu(+/-)tau(-/+) and B(0)-->e(+/-)tau(-/+). The tau lepton was detected through the decay modes tau-->lnunu(-) , where l=e, mu.

p53-Binding protein 1 is fused to the platelet-derived growth factor receptor beta in a patient with a t(5;15)(q33;q22) and an imatinib-responsive eosinophilic myeloproliferative disorder.

We describe the fusion of TP53BP1 to PDGFRB in a patient with a chronic myeloid leukemia-like disorder associated with eosinophilia and a t(5;15)(q33;q22). TP53BP1 encodes 53BP1, a p53-binding protein that plays a role in cellular responses to DNA damage. The 53BP1-PDGFRbeta fusion protein is predicted to retain the kinetochore-binding domain of 53BP1 fused to the transmembrane and intracellular tyrosine kinase domain of PDGFRbeta.
