Background: Diphtheria is a re-emerging infectious disease and public health concern worldwide and in Vietnam with increasing cases in recent years. This study aimed to assess the anti-diphtheria toxoid antibodies status in Khanh Hoa Province and identify factors contributing to the vaccination policy in the south-central coast of Vietnam.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study to evaluate the seroprevalence of anti-diphtheria toxoid antibodies among 1,195 participants, aged 5 - 40 years in Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam.

Background: The live-attenuated influenza virus vector-based intranasal SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (dNS1-RBD, Pneucolin; Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise, Beijing, China) confers long-lasting and broad protection in animal models and is, to our knowledge, the first COVID-19 mucosal vaccine to enter into human trials, but its efficacy is still unknown. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy (but not the immunogenicity) of dNS1-RBD against COVID-19.

Methods: We did a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, adaptive design, phase 3 trial at 33 centres (private or public hospitals, clinical research centres, or Centre for Disease Control and Prevention) in four countries (Colombia, Philippines, South Africa, and Viet Nam).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of receiving fewer than the standard 8 doses of teprotumumab in patients with thyroid eye disease due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • It involved 74 patients, mostly women, who received an average of 4.2 infusions and showed significant reductions in proptosis and clinical activity score during the interruption period.
  • The findings suggest that even partial treatment with teprotumumab can lead to meaningful improvements and these benefits are sustained despite treatment interruptions.

A 59-year-old woman with prior bilateral lower eyelid autologous fat transfer, subdermal micro-needling and fractional radiofrequency skin resurfacing presented with delayed left-sided preseptal cellulitis with small multinodular abscesses unresponsive to oral outpatient antibiotic regimens and inpatient intravenous antibiotics. Wound culture revealed infection treated successfully with a 4-month regimen of clarithromycin and tedizolid without recurrence. This case highlights (1) the need for vigilance and a broad differential in delayed post-operative wound infections including non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections, (2) resolution of infection without recurrence on clarithromycin and novel tedizolid oral antibiotic therapy, and (3) that caution should be exercised when performing combination autologous fat transfers with subdermal micro-needling procedures as the breakdown in skin integrity may potentiate infection.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the effectiveness of combining different rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) to determine dengue virus (DENV) immune status at the point of care, simplifying the diagnostic process.
  • The research involved analyzing serum from dengue patients in Indonesia and Vietnam to correlate rapid test outcomes with laboratory results, revealing a high accuracy in identifying primary and post-primary infections.
  • The findings suggest that using a combination of NS1, IgM, and IgG RDTs can accurately estimate a patient’s DENV immune status, potentially enhancing diagnosis in clinical settings where laboratory access is limited.

Objective: To determine whether environmental surface contamination with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) occurred at a provincial hospital in Viet Nam that admitted patients with novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and at the regional reference laboratory responsible for confirmatory testing for SARS-CoV-2 in 2020.

Methods: Environmental samples were collected from patient and staff areas at the hospital and various operational and staff areas at the laboratory. Specimens from frequently touched surfaces in all rooms were collected using a moistened swab rubbed over a 25 cm area for each surface.

This is a rare presentation of a unilateral optic nerve infarction of the left eye caused by mucormycosis in a 51-year-old man with poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes. Diffusion-weighted MRI of the orbit demonstrated extensive infarction of the left optic nerve with ipsilateral cavernous sinus thrombosis and periorbital adnexal inflammation. Left orbital exenteration and sinus debridement were performed, and mucormycosis involving the optic nerve sheath was confirmed on histopathology.

A 35-year-old woman with a history of cocaine abuse presented with progressively worsening OS pain. Neuroimaging revealed a 3-cm ill-defined left orbital lesion involving the intraconal and extraconal spaces. The orbital mass was biopsied via an anterior orbitotomy approach.

Purpose: Define incidence of severe ocular trauma in orbital fracture patients and determine if ocular signs and symptoms are useful predictors of severe ocular injuries.

Methods: Retrospective chart review was performed on all patients with orbital fractures between April 1, 2013, and December 31, 2014. Patients were included if they had radiographic evidence of acute fracture of at least one orbital wall and were evaluated by the Ophthalmology service.

Article Synopsis
  • A study in Nha Trang, Vietnam, found that 40.6% of retail meats and shrimp were contaminated with ESBL-producing E. coli, a type of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
  • The common ESBL genotypes included CTX-M-1, CTX-M-9, and TEM, with a significant portion (85.9%) showing multidrug resistance.
  • The findings highlight the need for better monitoring and public health interventions to manage the spread of these bacteria in food supplies.

We describe the design, synthesis and fluorescence profiles of new self-calibrating viscosity dyes in which a coumarin (reference fluorophore) has been covalently linked with a molecular rotor (viscosity sensor). Characterization of their fluorescence properties was made with separate excitation of the units and through resonance energy transfer from the reference to the sensor dye. We have modified the linker and the substitution of the rotor in order to change the hydrophilicity of these probes thereby altering their subcellular localization.
