Background:  Experiential learning through simulation allows students to apply didactic knowledge to real-world situations. Tabletop simulation allows for the exploration of a variety of topics, including cybersecurity in health care. Due to its low frequency, yet high-risk nature, simulation is a perfect educational modality to practice responding to a cybersecurity attack.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is four-fold. First, the hospitals' current level of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) adoption is reported; second, internal and external influence factors' roles in determining CPOE adoption rates are described; third, the future diffusion rate of CPOE systems in US hospitals is empirically predicted; finally, the current technology's state-of-the-art is assessed.

Beating the system to maximize efficiency will yield no positive return on a bar code investment, in terms of reducing medical errors. The critical success factor in the bar coding scenario is that of operational effectiveness. By shifting the nurses' focus from that of efficiency to that of operational effectiveness, the use of bar coding medication technology will reduce medication errors.
