Evaluation of Periorbital Edema and Ecchymosis After Osteotomy in Septorhinoplasty Cases by Measuring Bone Density and Thickness.

Purpose: Periorbital edema and ecchymosis that may occur after surgery in septorhinoplasty patients who have undergone lateral osteotomy are common morbidities and are seen as the main limiting factors for the recovery process of the patients. There are many different studies in the literature about the causes of periorbital edema and ecchymosis. In this study, the authors aimed to investigate the possible relationships between the bone density and bone thickness measured in the frontal process of the maxillary bone, and postoperative periorbital edema and ecchymosis, which are suitable for the osteotomy lines that they will detect in computerized tomography.

Utility of shear wave elastography for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome with psoriatic arthritis.

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a type of peripheral entrapment neuropathy and common for the patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a new ultrasonography technique that can be used for diagnosing CTS, but not studied in PsA patients.

Aims: The aim of this study to measure the stiffness of median nerve and hand muscles by quantitative SWE to identify whether SWE can be used for diagnosing CTS in patients with PsA or not.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Patients with Psoriatic Arthritis: Ultrasonography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings.

Objective: The aim of the present study is to assess carpal tunnel syndrome's (CTS's) ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and compare them with healthy controls.

Methods: Thirty-nine PsA and twenty-eight healthy volunteers were examined in this study. Demographic and clinical features were recorded.

Genome-scale models have been shown to be valuable in studying the metabolism of many organisms.

Calcifying fibrous tumor of the pancreas: A case report.

A calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor characterized by a hypocellular fibroblastic proliferation with associated chronic inflammation and variably prominent calcification. Gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the most common predilection site of CFT. English-language literature reveals approximate 50 such reports of GI-CFTs.

Comparison of cervical and ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potential responses between tone burst versus chirp stimulation.

Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of chirp and tone burst stimuli in oVEMP and cVEMP testing for healthy adults METHODS: This study was conducted in 56 healthy volunteers (112 ears). Ocular and cervical VEMP (oVEMP, cVEMP) tests were performed for each participant using tone burst and chirp stimuli. VEMP response rates, latency of each peak (p1-n1, n1-p1), peak to peak amplitude (p1-n1 amplitude and n1-p1 amplitude), and rectified amplitudes were measured and compared between these two different stimuli.

Assessment of functional and aesthetic outcomes in septorhinoplasty.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to review the aesthetic and functional outcomes of septorhinoplasty using questionnaires that have never been collectively used, as well as surgeons' evaluation.

Materials And Methods: Our study was conducted prospectively among 100 patients who underwent septorhinoplasty operation. We evaluated the effects of septorhinoplasty's functional and aesthetic outcomes on patients' emotional status using a combination of NOSE, ROE, DAS-24, and GBI questionnaires as well as surgeons' evaluations.

The effect of fibromyalgia treatment on tinnitus.

Objectives: We investigated the frequency of tinnitus in fibromyalgia patients and the effect of drugs used for routine fibromyalgia on tinnitus.

Methods: We included 101 diagnosed fibromyalgia patients. After detailed ear nose throat examination, audiometric tests and tinnitus handicap index (THI) were performed.

Spontaneous resolution of a spontaneous steinstrasse: a case report.

A 63-year-old man presented with a 4-day history of right sided loin-to-groin pain. Computed tomography imaging revealed a 22 mm by 7 mm volume of contiguous ureteric calculi at the right vesicoureteric junction. Spontaneous steinstrasse was diagnosed with no recent history of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) or other urological intervention to the right kidney.

Multiple Non-Essential Transition Metals Are Accumulated in Carotid Atherosclerotic Plaques: Missing Link in Atherosclerosis?

Population studies revealed that metal exposure through food, environment, and smoking was related with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. In this study, we determined complex chemical elements in surgical carotid endarterectomy specimens and carotid tissues from autopsies without atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic plaques from 41 endarterectomies and normal carotid tissue from 30 autopsies were collected and elemental composition was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) method.

A new method for recovery of cellulose from lignocellulosic bio-waste: Pile processing.

This paper presents a new delignification method (pile processing) for the recovery of cellulose from lignocellulosic bio-wastes, adapted from heap leaching technology in metallurgy. The method is based on the stacking of cellulosic materials in a pile, irrigation of the pile with aqueous reactive solution from the top, lignin and hemicellulose removal and enrichment of cellulose by the reactive solution while percolation occurs through the bottom of the pile, recirculating the reactive solution after adjusting several values such as chemical concentrations, and allow the system run until the desired time or cellulose purity. Laboratory scale systems were designed using fall leaves (FL) as lignocellulosic waste materials.

Differential diagnosis of elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein levels: a rheumatology perspective.

Objective: In the case of high erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, the diagnosis of the underlying disease can be challenging especially in serologically unrevealing patients who have nonspecific clinical findings. We aimed to investigate the final distribution of definitive diagnoses in patients who initially presented with nonspecific clinical findings and sustained elevations in serum ESR/CRP levels.

Material And Methods: The medical records of patients hospitalized in a rheumatology clinic between January 2010 and January 2011 were retrospectively analyzed.

Background: Voice may be affected during the period of pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. However, the exact mechanisms leading to the phonatory changes have not yet uncovered.

Aims: The aim of this study is to investigate the possible histological changes in the vocal cords of the pregnant rats in three separate trimesters.

Malignant eccrine spiradenoma of the external ear.

Eccrine spiradenoma is a benign tumor of sweat gland origin. Malignant eccrine spiradenoma is a rare neoplasm which almost always arises from a pre-existing spiradenoma lesion. In this article, we present a patient with malignant eccrine spiradenoma of the auricula with a prior diagnosis as benign eccrine spiradenoma.

Facial, cervical, and mediastinal emphysema of the clarinet player: case report.

Background: Cervicofacial emphysema may arise due to the leakage of air from a defect in the aerodigestive tract to the fascial layers of neck and face. Rarely, it may be caused by insufflation of air through the Stensen's duct.

Case Report: We present a case with diffuse facial, cervical and mediastinal emphysema due to playing a wind instrument immediately after a facial trauma.

In this study, we aimed to collect data regarding the demographic and clinical features, comorbid factors, and precipitating factors associated with the initiation of acute attacks in gout patients in Turkey.

Salivary gland neoplasms are rare in the pediatric age group. Pleomorphic adenomas in the submandibular gland are rarer. In this article, we present a seven-year-old female with a slowly growing mass in her right submandibular area.

Neurochemistry of the hippocampus in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Aim: To date, despite possible neuroanatomical importance, no magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) study on hippocampus has been performed in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The purpose of the present study was therefore to compare hippocampal chemicals in patients with OCD with those in healthy subjects with no psychopathology.

Methods: Eighteen patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for OCD and 18 healthy controls were studied.

Effect of sertindole on QTc interval in patients with schizophrenia.

Sertindole has been marketed and offered daily clinical practice only for 9 months in our country, so no data has been its QTc prolongation potential. In the present study, we performed a clinical trial to investigate the effects of sertindole on QTc in patients with schizophrenia. The study comprised 21 patients with schizophrenia.

Free testosterone levels and implications on clinical outcomes in elderly men.

Background And Aims: Aging is accompanied by a progressive decline in serum testosterone. Evidence concerning the clinical manifestations of low serum testosterone levels is contradictory. We aimed to examine the age-related decline in testosterone and the possible clinical outcomes, including erectile dysfunction, prostatism, cognitive function, daily life activities, depression, and osteoporosis.

Hippocampus and amygdalar volumes in patients with refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Functional and structural neuroimaging studies have implicated the hippocampus-amygdala complex in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), although no consensus has been established. These brain regions have not been investigated in refractory OCD patients. Volumes of the hippocampus, and amygdala were measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a sample of 14 refractory OCD patients and 14 healthy comparison subjects.

Antioxidant enzyme and malondialdehyde levels in patients with social phobia.

A growing body of reports have indicated that free radicals are involved in the etiopathogenesis of some neuropsychiatric disorders. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate whether antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase; SOD, glutathione peroxidase; GSH-Px, and catalase; CAT) activity levels and malondialdehyde (MDA), a product of lipid peroxidation, were associated with social phobia (SP). Eighteen patients diagnosed with SP and 18 healthy controls were enrolled.
