Effect of vitamin K1 supplementation on coronary calcifications in hemodialysis patients: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with several adverse cardiovascular outcomes, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, and arrhythmias. The severity of arterial calcifications predicts the risk of coronary heart disease and increases the risk of premature cardiovascular death. In experimental models, vitamin K1 supplementation appears to reduce coronary artery calcifications.

[Cartilage island versus temporalis fascia in high-risk tympanic perforation].

Background: The tympanoplasty for high-risk tympanic membrane perforation is a challenge. It is necessary to compare the most useful and feasible surgical technics in our environment for these patients. The objective was to compare the cartilage island tympanoplasty for the treatment of high-risk tympanic membrane perforations versus the use of temporalis fascia.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor plasma levels and premature cognitive impairment/dementia in type 2 diabetes.

Aim: To assess the relationship of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) with cognitive impairment in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: The study included 40 patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2), 37 patients with chronic kidney disease in hem dialysis hemodialysis therapy (HD) and 40 healthy subjects. BDNF in serum was quantified by ELISA.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids Supplementation and Oxidative Stress in HIV-Seropositive Patients. A Clinical Trial.

HIV-seropositive patients show high incidence of coronary heart disease and oxidative stress has been described as relevant key in atherosclerosis development. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of omega 3 fatty acids on different markers of oxidative stress in HIV-seropositive patients. We performed a randomized parallel controlled clinical trial in The Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, a public health hospital.
