False-positive Elevation of Beta-D-glucan and Aspergillus Galactomannan Levels Due to Mendelson's Syndrome after Rice Aspiration.

Both 1,3-beta-D-glucan (BDG) and galactomannan (GM) are polysaccharide components of the fungal cell wall. Although elevated levels of serum BDG and Aspergillus GM suggest invasive fungal infection or Pneumocystis pneumonia and aspergillosis, respectively, it is also necessary to consider the possibility of false-positives. We herein report a 68-year-old man with marked elevation in serum BDG and GM levels accompanied by Mendelson's syndrome after rice aspiration.

Cultivation and biogeochemical analyses reveal insights into methanogenesis in deep subseafloor sediment at a biogenic gas hydrate site.

Gas hydrates deposited in subseafloor sediments are considered to primarily consist of biogenic methane. However, little evidence for the occurrence of living methanogens in subseafloor sediments has been provided. This study investigated viable methanogen diversity, population, physiology and potential activity in hydrate-bearing sediments (1-307 m below the seafloor) from the eastern Nankai Trough.

The 1-minute sit-to-stand test to detect desaturation during 6-minute walk test in interstitial lung disease.

Although the 6 min walk test (6MWT) is well-established for assessing desaturation in patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD), it cannot be easily performed in primary healthcare settings. This retrospective observational study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the 1 min sit-to-stand test (1STST) for assessing desaturation during 6MWT in ILD patients with normal resting blood oxygen levels. We included 116 patients, and the pulse oxygen saturation (SpO) for both methods was analyzed.

Changes in microbial communities associated with gas hydrates in subseafloor sediments from the Nankai Trough.

Little is known about the microbial distribution patterns in subseafloor sediments. This study examines microbial diversity and activities in sediments of the Nankai Trough, where biogenic gas hydrates are deposited. Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA genes revealed that the prokaryotic community structure is correlated with hydrate occurrence and depth but not with the sedimentary facies.

Effects of Defecation Strain at Various Bed Reclining Angles on Intrarectal Pressure and Cardiovascular Responses.

Background: There is no clear information about the optimal bed reclining angle for promoting efficient and safe defecation in bedfast patients.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the optimal bed reclining angle for facilitating increases in intrarectal pressure without causing marked cardiovascular changes in order to develop an efficient and safe defecation position for bedfast patients.

Methods: Twelve healthy men participated in this study.

MET gene amplification or EGFR mutation activate MET in lung cancers untreated with EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

We analyzed MET protein and copy number in NSCLC with or without EGFR mutations untreated with EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). MET copy number was examined in 28 NSCLC and 4 human bronchial epithelial cell lines (HBEC) and 100 primary tumors using quantitative real-time PCR. Positive results were confirmed by array comparative genomic hybridization and fluorescence in-situ hybridization.

ERCC1 protein expression predicts the response of cisplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy in non-small-cell lung cancer.

The excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) and BRCA1 have been identified as predictors of clinical outcomes among patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy. In this study, we immunohistochemically examined the ERCC1 and BRCA1 protein expression levels in 35 patients with metastatic mediastinal lymph nodes obtained prior to treatment as retrospective study. These patients had been enrolled in our studies on neoadjuvant chemotherapy with cisplatin and irinotecan (15 patients) or chemoradiotherapy with cisplatin and docetaxel plus concurrent thoracic radiation (20 patients).

Improved quality of life for malignant ascites patients by Denver peritoneovenous shunts.

Background: Intractable ascites secondary to malignant disease deteriorates the patients' quality of life.

Patients And Methods: Thirty-three patients, who had undergone Denver peritoneovenous shunt for the treatment of ascites associated with malignant tumor from May 1998 to February 2004, were retrospectively analyzed.

Results: Post-operative complications had occurred in twelve patients, including disseminated intravascular coagulation in eight, pulmonary edema in three and wound hematoma in one.
