The definition of sarcopenia assessed by computed tomography (CT) varies among different reports, and few studies have examined the effect of muscle mass loss on the prognosis of post-hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). We retrospectively evaluated 172 patients who underwent an initial allogeneic HCT for acute leukemia at our institution. They were divided into 3 groups according to muscle mass measured at the third lumbar vertebra as assessed by CT.

Article Synopsis
  • High-dose methotrexate (MTX) is commonly used to treat blood cancers, but it can cause kidney damage (nephrotoxicity) even with preventative care measures.
  • A study of 88 patients treated with high-dose MTX found that 11 experienced nephrotoxicity, primarily linked to high MTX levels; urine pH on day 1 was also a significant risk factor.
  • Specifically, a urine pH of less than 7.0 on day 1 was linked to a higher risk of kidney issues and delayed MTX elimination, while low serum calcium levels were associated with this lower urine pH.
