There has been no prior reports of its association with autoimmune disease, more specifically, autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) or the development of pediatric acute liver failure (PALF). We present a case of an 8-month-old infant with TAR syndrome who presented with PALF, secondary to AIH with elevated liver-kidney microsomal antibody (>1:2560).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground & Aims: PEDFIC 2, an ongoing, open-label, 72-week study, evaluates odevixibat, an ileal bile acid transporter inhibitor, in patients with progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis.
Methods: PEDFIC 2 enrolled and dosed 69 patients across two cohorts; all received odevixibat 120 μg/kg per day. Cohort 1 comprised children from PEDFIC 1, and cohort 2 comprised new patients (any age).
We studied the formation of zinc selenide (ZnSe) from zinc chloride (ZnCl2) and trioctylphosphine selenide (TOP=Se) in oleylamine, a chemistry originally proposed to grow ZnSe shells around InP core quantum dots. By monitoring the formation of ZnSe in reactions with and without InP seeds by quantitative absorbance and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we observe that the ZnSe formation rate is independent of the presence of InP cores. Similar to the seeded growth of CdSe and CdS, this observation supports a ZnSe growth mechanism through the inclusion of reactive ZnSe monomers that form homogeneously in the solution.

Attention paid to elucidating the role of Nkcc1 has mainly been focused on neurons, but recent single cell mRNA sequencing analysis has demonstrated that the major cellular populations expressing NKCC1 in the cortex are non-neuronal. We used a combination of conditional transgenic animals, in vivo electrophysiology, two-photon imaging, cognitive behavioural tests and flow cytometry to investigate the role of Nkcc1 inhibition by bumetanide in a mouse model of controlled cortical impact (CCI).

Approach And Results: A targeted enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay-based panel of nine biomarkers (lysyl oxidase, tissue inhibitor matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 1, connective tissue growth factor [CTGF], IL-8, endoglin, periostin, Mac-2-binding protein, MMP-3, and MMP-7) was examined in children with biliary atresia (BA; n = 187), alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (A1AT; n = 78), and Alagille syndrome (ALGS; n = 65) and correlated with liver stiffness (LSM) and biochemical measures of liver disease. Background: We compared patient and caregiver knowledge and confidence for managing asthma, and participant experiences when comprehensive asthma education was delivered in person versus in the virtual setting.
Methods: We performed a multi-methods study using structured surveys and qualitative interviews to solicit feedback from patients and caregivers following participation in a comprehensive asthma education session between April 2018 and October 2021. We compared participant knowledge and confidence for managing asthma as well as user experience when the education was attended in-person or virtually.

Background: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) is a group of inherited paediatric liver diseases resulting from mutations in genes that impact bile secretion. We aimed to evaluate the effects of odevixibat, an ileal bile acid transporter inhibitor, versus placebo in children with PFIC.
Methods: Patients eligible for this 24-week, randomised, double-blind, completed, phase 3 study were paediatric outpatients diagnosed with PFIC1 or PFIC2 who had pruritus and elevated serum bile acids at screening.
Background: Tourette syndrome (TS) can be accompanied by neurocognitive impairment. Only a few studies have focused on executive function assessment in TS using design fluency, providing preliminary results. This study aimed to characterize the detailed design fluency profile of children with TS compared with neurotypical children, while addressing the central concern of frequent comorbidities in studies on TS by considering tic severity and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and diagnosis.

Managing post-traumatic stress reactions in the first few days after exposure to a potentially traumatic event in the course of one's work remains a challenge for first responder organizations such as Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed approach to reducing initial distress and promoting short- and long-term coping strategies among staff in the aftermath of exposure. PFA provided by peer helpers is considered a promising solution for first responder organizations.

The use of human tissue stem cell-derived organoids has advanced our knowledge of human physiological and pathophysiological processes that are unable to be studied using other model systems. Increased understanding of human epithelial tissues including intestine, stomach, liver, pancreas, lung, and brain have been achieved using organoids. However, it is not yet clear whether these cultures recapitulate in vivo organ-to-organ signaling or communication.
