Antithymocyte globulin (ATG) reduces severe acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). However, risk factors for severe acute GVHD in PBSCT using ATG remain to be determined. We conducted a single-center, retrospective study to analyze the association of acute GVHD requiring systemic corticosteroid (SC-aGVHD) with absolute lymphocyte counts (ALC) before the administration of ATG or conditioning in 53 patients with HLA-matched PBSCT using low-dose thymoglobulin (2 mg/kg) after myeloablative conditioning.

Rapid and simple point-of-care detection of SARS-CoV-2 is an urgent need to prevent pandemic. Reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) can detect SARS-CoV-2 more rapidly than RT-PCR. Saliva is non-invasive specimen suitable for mass-screening, but data comparing utility of nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) and saliva in RT-LAMP test are lacking and it remains unclear whether SARS-CoV-2 could be detected by direct processing of samples without the need for prior RNA extraction saliva.

Elderly patients aged 65 or older with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have poor prognosis. The risk stratification based on genetic alteration has been proposed in national comprehensive cancer network (NCCN) guideline but its efficacy was not well verified especially in real world elderly patients. The nutritional status assessment using controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score is a prognostic biomarker in elderly patients with solid tumors but was not examined in elderly AML patients.

The potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to differentiate into nonmesodermal cells such as pancreatic beta cells has been reported. New cell-based therapy using MSCs for diabetes mellitus is anticipated as an alternative treatment option to insulin injection or islet transplantation in both human and veterinary medicine. Several protocols were reported for differentiation of MSCs into insulin-producing cells (IPCs), but no studies have reported IPCs generated from canine MSCs.

Pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL) is a valuable pulmonary function test to evaluate the gas exchange capacity of the lungs. Generally, DL values are significantly lower in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), particularly in those with a predominantly emphysema phenotype. However, it is extremely rare that DL values cannot be obtained for reasons other than technical errors.

Aquaporins (AQPs) are essential to coordinate the transit of water and ions through the cell membrane. In salivary glands (SGs), AQPs have been associated with saliva formation, facilitating water absorption through the epithelium during the formation of hypotonic saliva, which is then secreted into the oral cavity. Different members of the AQP family have been suggested to play distinct roles during embryonic development, highlighted by their specific expression patterns.

This study explored the burden associated with stem cell mobilization, with or without cyclophosphamide (CPA), in patients who intended to receive autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for multiple myeloma (MM). A Japanese health care claims database (MDV) was used to analyze the health care resource utilization patterns and medical cost between 2013 and 2016 (pre-plerixafor launch). The patients were further categorized into groups who received granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) alone or G-CSF + CPA group and analyzed in both mobilization and ASCT phases of treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 is primarily spread by asymptomatic carriers, making it crucial to accurately detect SARS-CoV-2 in these individuals for effective outbreak prevention.
  • A study compared the effectiveness of nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) and self-collected saliva samples in detecting the virus among asymptomatic individuals, finding that saliva had a sensitivity of 92% versus 86% for NPS.
  • Both testing methods showed high specificity (>99.9%), and self-collected saliva samples proved to be a valuable and convenient option for mass screening in asymptomatic populations.

Posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy:100 mg/kg) has been increasingly used in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, however, few studies compared different doses of PTCy. We conducted two consecutive prospective multicenter phase II studies to evaluate the safety and efficacy of 80 mg/kg of PTCy in 137 patients who underwent HLA-haploidentical peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (haploPBSCT) following reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC). GVHD prophylaxis consisted of PTCy at a dose of 40 mg/kg/day on days 3 and 4, tacrolimus, and mycophenolate mofetil.

Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Emerging evidence indicates that poor nutritional status determined with nutritional indices such as geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and controlling nutritional status score (CONUT) was associated with poor prognosis of DLBCL. We conducted this multicenter retrospective study to validate and compare prognostic values of the three indices in 615 newly diagnosed DLBCL patients.

  • The KEYNOTE-185 study investigated the effects of adding pembrolizumab to a standard treatment for multiple myeloma in Japanese patients but was halted early due to safety concerns.
  • In a small group of 52 patients, the combination of pembrolizumab with lenalidomide and low-dose dexamethasone showed promising progression-free survival rates, with 6-month outcomes of 91.2% compared to 86.2% for the standard treatment.
  • However, the study's limitations include a short follow-up period of 7.2 months and a small sample size, raising questions about the applicability of the findings to the larger population.

Article Synopsis
  • * Among 391 patients treated between 2006 and 2014, a significant number died from various causes, with notable risk factors identified as having a previous surgery for esophageal cancer and receiving simultaneous RT for synchronous esophageal cancer.
  • * The findings suggest that while RT can preserve the larynx in HSC patients, it should be approached carefully in those with a history of esophageal cancer-related treatments due to increased risks of non-cancer deaths.

Patients with autoimmune diseases (AIDs) may develop lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs) during treatment with immunosuppressive agents (IS) such as methotrexate (MTX), biological agents, or tacrolimus. Some LPDs in patients with AIDs (AID-LPDs) regress after withdrawal of IS, and a high incidence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positivity in such patients has been reported. To identify characteristics and factors predictive of the response to treatment and disease progression, we retrospectively analyzed clinical and histopathological data for 81 patients with AID-LPDs.

The vestibular lamina (VL) is a transient developmental structure that forms the lip furrow, creating a gap between the lips/cheeks and teeth (oral vestibule). Surprisingly, little is known about the development of the VL and its relationship to the adjacent dental lamina (DL), which forms the teeth. In some congenital disorders, such as Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome, development of the VL is disrupted and multiple supernumerary frenula form, physically linking the lips and teeth.
