Background/aim: Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are characterized by renal developmental disorders in the embryonic period. STAT3 is a member of the STAT protein family. The members of this protein family play roles in various cellular mechanisms, such as the early stages of embryonic development, kidney development, and renal diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • The Mediterranean Sea is really polluted, especially with tiny pieces of plastic called microplastics.
  • Researchers have looked at many studies about this pollution over the past few years, focusing mostly on fish and other sea animals.
  • There are still big gaps in our understanding, especially in the southern parts of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, so more studies need to be done in a more organized way.

Protein profiles of skin secretions of Rana dalmatina (Agile Frog), Rana macrocnemis (Uludağ Frog), Rana tavasensis (Tavas Frog) and Rana holtzi (Taurus Frog) frog species belonging to the Rana genus distributed in the Anatolian region of Türkiye were determined for the first time using the Tricine-SDS-PAGE Electrophoresis method and Coomassie Brilliant Blue (CBB) staining. By the results, some peptides with mass ≤5 kDa were detected. Just one peptide with mass ≤5 kDa was found in the secretion of each R.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluates patients with antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (anti-MOG-IgG), assessing their clinical, radiological, and demographic characteristics in relation to conditions like optic neuritis and myelitis.
  • Among the 104 participants, the majority were women, and the most common diagnoses included NMOSD, isolated optic neuritis, and ADEM, with a notable percentage showing symptoms resembling MS.
  • Findings indicate that older patients (>40 years) experienced more severe disability and poorer responses to treatment, highlighting the significance of anti-MOG-IgG in diagnosing NMOSD in patients without anti-NMO antibodies.

The increasing amount of marine litter pollution and its impact on the marine environment raises global concern. This study aims to reveal the effect of streams on marine litter density and composition. A total of ten stations on the southeastern Black Sea and six stations on the Manahoz stream were seasonally surveyed.

Spatial distribution and ecological risk levels of toxic metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, As, Sr, V, and La) in sediments from the southern Black Sea coastal (Türkiye) were evaluated. The sediment samples were taken in April and May 2019 from thirty-one stations, from depths ranged between 16 and 65 m. The average metal concentrations (in dry weight) varied from 59.

Surficial marine sediment samples were collected along the southeastern Black Sea (Trabzon) coast. The sampling was conducted in June 2019 from eleven stations, with the depths varying between 8 and 30 m. Metal concentrations (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, As, and Cr) were evaluated in four different sediment size fractions; 0.

Background: To evaluate the relationship between IL-1α -889C/T (rs1800587), IL-1β -511C > T (rs16944), TNFα -308G > A (rs1800629), TNFα -238G > A (rs361525), IL-6 -174G > C (rs1800795), and IL-6 -572G > C (rs1800796) polymorphisms and the susceptibility to transposition of the great arteries (TGA).

Methods: A prospective analysis was performed on mothers whose newborns were diagnosed as having TGA. For each case of TGA, a mother who gave birth to a healthy neonate in the same period was randomly selected for the control group.

The composition and abundance of solid waste and the effect of COVID-19 measures were studied in an inland water ecosystem in Turkey. Solid waste items were collected annually for 5 years from 2017 to 2021 from seven stations located in Borçka Dam Lake (B1-B4) and Murgul Stream (M1-M3) in the Artvin Province. The highest densities by number and weight were recorded at M3 in 2020 (5.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a monogenic autoinflammatory disorder with recurrent fever, abdominal pain, serositis, articular manifestations, erysipelas-like erythema, and renal complications as its main features. Caused by the mutations in the MEditerranean FeVer (MEFV) gene, it mainly affects people of Mediterranean descent with a higher incidence in the Turkish, Jewish, Arabic, and Armenian populations. As our understanding of FMF improves, it becomes clearer that we are facing with a more complex picture of FMF with respect to its pathogenesis, penetrance, variant type (gain-of-function vs.

This study aimed to identify the yeast strains associated with the tree bark samples collected from the Aegean and Marmara regions and from rotten fruit samples. Fifty-one yeast strains were successfully isolated and screened for their abilities to produce industrially important extracellular enzymes. Thirty isolates demonstrated ability to produce at least two different enzymes and were selected for subsequent molecular identification using sequence analysis of ITS region and D1/D2 domain of the 26S rDNA.

Objectives: Acute and chronic allograft rejection have been continuously an important obstacle in the follow-up of renal transplant recipients. During clinical management, several factors acting simultaneously result in acute rejection and chronic allograft nephropathy. Matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases are responsible for the organization of the extracellular matrix and play roles in cell proliferation and cellular invasion.

Turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, is a commercially important demersal flatfish species distributed throughout the Black Sea. Several studies performed locally with a limited number of specimens using both mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and microsatellite markers evidenced notable genetic variation among populations. However, comprehensive population genetic studies are required to help management of the species in the Black Sea.
