We investigated the development of esophageal neoplasia in biopsy specimens of the distinct iodine-unstained lesions (DIULs) ≥ 5 mm detected in 280 of 2,115 Japanese alcoholic men who underwent screening by esophageal iodine staining. Low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (LGIN) was diagnosed in 155 of them, high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGIN) in 57, and invasive SCC in 35. The size of the DIULs increased with the degree of neoplasia.

Melanosis is frequently observed in the upper aerodigestive tract of Japanese alcoholic men, and the prevalences of squamous cell dysplasia and SCC in the upper aerodigestive tract of Japanese alcoholic men are high. This study evaluated associations between melanosis and both neoplasms of the upper aerodigestive tract and factors contributing to the development of melanosis in Japanese alcoholic men. Endoscopic screening of 643 Japanese alcoholic men (aged 50-79 years) was combined with oropharyngolaryngeal inspection and esophageal iodine staining, and ALDH2 genotyping was carried out in 425 of them.

Purpose: This study was designed to investigate whether the histologic types of the primary lesion and of metastatic lymph nodes in Stage III colon cancer are useful as prognostic factors. The usefulness of adjuvant chemotherapy in a randomized, controlled trial by using these prognostic factors as stratification criteria was also investigated.

Methods: Stage III colon cancer patients were enrolled and were divided into two groups: Group W, in which the histologic type of both primary tumors and metastatic lymph nodes was well-differentiated adenocarcinoma; and Group U, in which the primary tumors and the metastatic lymph nodes were of any type other than well-differentiated.
