Purpose: To compare long-term outcomes of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) versus Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) under a failed penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) graft.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed consecutive surgeries (Febuary 2007-September 2023) that received a DSAEK graft (n = 52) or DMEK graft (n = 51) under a failed PKP. Postoperative complication rates of primary graft failure (PGF), late endothelial graft failure, graft rejection, rebubble, and steroid response were recorded.
Chromatin states play important roles in the maintenance of cell identities, yet their spatial patterns remain poorly characterized at the organism scale. We developed a systematic approach to analyzing spatial epigenomic data and then applied it to a recently published spatial-CUT&Tag dataset that was obtained from a mouse embryo. This study describes MSK injury patterns among hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers from 2002 through 2021 and investigates MSK injury trends acquired during mountain sports.
Methods: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was used to identify US emergency department (ED) patients from 2002-2021 (inclusive) who endured MSK injuries during hiking, trail running, or mountain biking.
It is well known that the chromatin states play a major role in cell-fate decision and cell-identity maintenance; however, the spatial variation of chromatin states remains poorly characterized. Here, by leveraging recently available spatial-CUT&Tag data, we systematically characterized the global spatial organization of the H3K4me3 profiles in a mouse embryo. Objectives: Our objective is to engage multidisciplinary users (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants) in the development of a graphical user interface (GUI) to present an AI-derived risk score.
Background: The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to frequent schedule changes, abbreviated seasons, and disrupted training at all levels of organized sports.
Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of sports-related injuries at a single National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I institution during the 2020 COVID lockdown season when compared with pre-COVID seasons. It was hypothesized that there would be an increase in the overall injury rate and an increase in the number of days missed because of injury during the 2020 season when compared with the previous seasons.
Background: Long-distance running is a popular form of cardiovascular exercise with many well-described health benefits, from improving heart health to the management of obesity, diabetes, and mental illness. The impact of long-distance running on joint health in recreational runners, however, remains inconclusive.
Hypothesis: The prevalence of osteoarthritis in runners is not associated with an athlete's running-related history, including the number of marathons completed, cumulative years of running, average weekly mileage, and average running pace.
Background: Trends between the sexes have been reported regarding prevalence, patient-reported outcomes (PROs), and complications of hip arthroscopy (HA) for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS), yet current results lack consensus.

Although previous research has identified that scheduling variations, including overseas games and bye week timing, does not affect concussion risk, data are currently lacking regarding the effects of scheduling variation on season-long musculoskeletal injury incidence.
Purpose: To determine whether higher cumulative travel distance, overseas play, an early season bye week, and an expansion of the regular season is associated with higher injury rates in the NFL.
Background: American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) are disproportionately affected by adolescent obesity, adolescent pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). GDM is associated with increased risk for perinatal death, obesity, and subsequent type 2 diabetes (T2D) for the offspring. Moreover, mothers with GDM are also at increased risk for T2D post-partum.

Purpose Of Review: Return to sport (RTS) is an important metric tied to patient satisfaction after receiving treatment for a sports-related injury. Recently, there has been an explosion of literature on RTS; yet a comprehensive review encompassing multiple injuries does not exist. Furthermore, RTS has historically been defined by quantitative measures that assess strength, function, and pain but little consideration has been given to psychologic factors nor has there been an open-ended forum for athletes to share with health care providers which factors they feel are most influential for RTS.

Background: Calcific tendinitis is a relatively common shoulder disorder, with 7%-17% of individuals with shoulder pain having rotator cuff calcium deposits. Several nonoperative interventions, extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and ultrasonography-guided needling (UGN), and surgical techniques have been described to treat calcific tendonitis with satisfactory outcomes. Clinical guidelines are lacking for surgical excision in cases refractory to nonoperative treatment.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: We aimed to compare the rate of 6-month endothelial cell loss (ECL) and 6-month graft survival in eyes that did not require a postoperative rebubble with eyes that did require a postoperative rebubble after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) surgery.
Methods: A consecutive series of DMEK surgeries performed from September 2013 to March 2020 was retrospectively analyzed. Eyes that did not require a rebubble for graft detachment were compared with eyes with 1 rebubble and eyes with 2 or more rebubbles for 6-month ECL and graft survival.
Background: Women with advanced cancer experience significant barriers to achieving high-quality care and maximizing their physical and emotional health. Our novel serious game, Strong Together, aims to teach women with advanced cancer self-advocacy skills needed to improve their symptom burden, quality of life, and patient-centered care.
Methods: This is a single-center, multi-site randomized clinical trial of the Strong Together intervention among 336 women within three months of an advanced breast or gynecologic cancer diagnosis.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether controlled balanced salt solution (BSS) bursts during graft preparation can safely promote formation of a double-scrolled Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) graft in younger donor tissue.
Methods: DMEK grafts prepared from young donor tissue (average age, 55 years; range, 39-66 years) were floated in BSS to spontaneously form scrolls (N = 10 pairs). Controlled BSS bursts were used to promote double-scroll (DS) formation in 1 member of each pair.
Background: Distal biceps rupture is a relatively uncommon injury that can significantly affect quality of life. Early complications following biceps tendon repair are not well described in the literature. This study utilizes a national surgical database to determine the incidence of and predictors for short-term complications following distal biceps tendon repair.

Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) are front-facing presentations for communicating AI outputs, but clinicians are not routinely invited to participate in their design, hindering AI solution potential.
Purpose: To inform early user-engaged design of a GUI prototype aimed at predicting future Cardiorespiratory Insufficiency (CRI) by exploring clinician methods for identifying at-risk patients, previous experience with implementing new technologies into clinical workflow, and user perspectives on GUI screen changes.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine whether loading a Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) graft using a drop-in procedure results in more endothelial cell loss (ECL) than the standard suction procedure.
Methods: Pairs of donor corneas with equivalent preprocessing endothelium were prepared using the standard protocol of our eye bank. One member of each pair was loaded into an injector using the standard suction protocol.
