Background: Hypomethylating agents (HMAs) are guideline-recommended treatment for higher-risk myelodysplastic syndromes/neoplasms (MDS). However, survey of patients with MDS reported challenges with intravenous (IV) and subcutaneous (SC) HMA therapies, including pain related to treatment administration and interference with daily activities; most patients also indicated a preference to switch to an oral therapy if one were available.

Objectives: This study evaluated the perspectives of US patients with MDS receiving oral decitabine/cedazuridine (DEC-C), an alternative to IV/SC HMAs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the relationship between immunosuppression and overall as well as cancer-specific mortality in patients with noninfectious ocular inflammatory disease.
  • Researchers examined data from over 15,000 patients over a median of 10 years and found there were 1970 deaths, with 435 attributed to cancer.
  • The results indicated that patients on various immunosuppressants experienced similar mortality rates compared to the general U.S. population, suggesting that these treatments did not significantly increase overall or cancer mortality risk.

Objectives: To develop and validate a machine-learning algorithm to predict fatal overdose using Pennsylvania Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) data.

Methods: The training/testing (n = 3020,748) and validation (n = 2237,701) cohorts included Pennsylvania residents with a prescription dispensing from February 2018-September 2021. Potential predictors (n = 222) were measured in the 6 months prior to a random index date.

Background: The average cost of insulin has increased greatly recently, partly due to prescription of newer expensive insulins. This has caused insulin underuse among economically vulnerable uninsured patients. Herein, predictors of preference for expensive (higher retail price) insulins among primary care physicians are investigated.

Background: Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) has been reportable to the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR) since the 1980s, but the completeness of reporting is unknown. This study assessed CML reporting in eastern Pennsylvania where a cluster of another myeloproliferative neoplasm was previously identified.

Methods: Cases were identified from 2 sources: 1) PCR case reports for residents of Carbon, Luzerne, or Schuylkill County with International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, Third Edition (ICD-O-3) codes 9875 (CML, BCR-ABL+), 9863 (CML, NOS), and 9860 (myeloid leukemia) and date of diagnosis 2001-2009, and 2) review of billing records at hematology practices.

Objective: To examine determinants of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and bone mineral density (BMD) in young physicians, a group not well studied previously.

Methods: We analyzed data from a questionnaire completed by young physicians as well as results of serum 25(OH)D, serum parathyroid hormone, and BMD measurements.

Results: Among 104 study subjects, 42% were white, 46% were Asian, 12% were "other" (10 Hispanic and 2 African American subjects), and 75% were women.
