Objective: Surgical resection remains the gold standard treatment for bronchiectasis in patients who present with hemoptysis or suppuration, as well as in those who do not respond to clinical treatment. We sought to investigate the efficacy of sublobar resection (segmentectomy) and compare it with that of lobar resection (lobectomy) in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

Methods: Patients undergoing lobectomy or segmentectomy between 2019 and 2023 were included in the study.

Background: To date, the only potential curative treatment for multiple myeloma (MM) remains allogeneic (allo) hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT), although, most patients will eventually relapse. In relapsed patients, donor lymphocyte infusions (DLIs) have been reported to control disease, but the optimal strategy prior to and doses of DLIs remain unclear. With this study (NCT03413800), we aimed to investigate the efficacy and toxicity of lenalidomide and dexamethasome (Len/Dex) followed by escalating pre-determined doses of DLIs in MM patients who relapsed after allo HCT.

Rare acute leukemia (AL) components or subtypes such as blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) or early T-cell precursor acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ETP-ALL) can be difficult to detect by routine flow cytometry due to their immunophenotypes overlapping with other poorly differentiated AL. We hypothesized that using standardized EuroFlow™ Consortium approach could better diagnose such entities among cases that previously classified as acute myeloid leukemia (AML)-M0, AML with minimal differentiation, AML with myelodysplasia-related changes without further lineage differentiation, and AL of ambiguous lineage. In order to confirm this hypothesis and assess whether these AL subtypes such as BPDCN and ETP-ALL had previously gone undetected, we reanalyzed 49 banked cryopreserved sample cases using standardized EuroFlow™ Consortium panels.

Background: Lung lymphatic drainage occurs mainly through a peribronchial path, but it is hypothesized that visceral pleural invasion could alter this path. This study aims to investigate the association between visceral pleural invasion, node upstaging, and N2 skip metastasis and the impact on survival in a population of patients with non-small cell lung cancer of 3 cm or smaller.

Methods: We retrospectively queried our institutional database of lung cancer resection for all patients with clinical stage IA NSCLC between June 2009 and June 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • Conventional thoracotomy (CT) can trigger systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), leading to various complications, while minimally invasive robotic surgery (RS) aims to reduce these issues.
  • This study tested the protective role of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in a pre-clinical model, analyzing the effects on hemodynamics and inflammation in minipigs undergoing CT or RS with varying use of VNS.
  • Results showed that VNS helped stabilize heart rates and lower cardiac complications and IL-6 levels post-surgery, suggesting that VNS could be an effective non-drug strategy for managing inflammation during surgical procedures.
