The electrolysis of aqueous solutions produces solutions that are supersaturated in oxygen and hydrogen gas. This results in the formation of gas bubbles, including nanobubbles ∼100 nm in size that are stable for ∼24 h. These aqueous solutions containing bubbles have been evaluated for cleaning efficacy in the removal of model contaminants bovine serum albumin and lysozyme from surfaces and in the prevention of the fouling of surfaces by these same proteins.

We have mapped and annotated the variable region of the immunoglobulin heavy (IGH) gene locus of the Brown Norway (BN) rat (assembly V3.4; Rat Genomic Sequence Consortium). In addition to known variable region genes, we found 12 novel previously unidentified functional IGHV genes and 1 novel functional IGHD gene.

Data from the Genetic Association Information Network (GAIN) genome-wide association study (GWAS) in major depressive disorder (MDD) were used to explore previously reported candidate gene and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) associations in MDD. A systematic literature search of candidate genes associated with MDD in case-control studies was performed before the results of the GAIN MDD study became available. Toxicological comparisons were made of three commercial cigarettes, namely Marlboro full flavor, Marlboro Lights, and Marlboro Ultra Lights, with the 1R4F reference cigarette. The main comparison was a 90-d inhalation study with mainstream smoke at 150 mg total particulate matter per cubic meter, in Sprague-Dawley rats using 6 h/d and 7 d/w exposures. The principal endpoint was histopathology of the respiratory tract, along with examinations of free lung cell counts after broncho-alveolar lavage.

The mammalian in vivo micronucleus assay is widely used as part of the genotoxicity testing battery required during the development of new drugs. As such, the in vivo micronucleus assay has been used in a battery of assays for the assessment of cigarette ingredients or design modifications to help ensure that there is no increase in risk or any new risk introduced by these additions or modifications. Many investigations have reported the successful mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for gene expression phenotypes (eQTLs). Local eQTLs, where expression phenotypes map to the genes themselves, are of especially great interest, because they are direct candidates for previously mapped physiological QTLs. Here we show that many mapped local eQTLs in genetical genomics experiments do not reflect actual expression differences caused by sequence polymorphisms in cis-acting factors changing mRNA levels.

Bacterial dehalogenases catalyse the cleavage of carbon-halogen bonds, which is a key step in aerobic mineralization pathways of many halogenated compounds that occur as environmental pollutants. There is a broad range of dehalogenases, which can be classified in different protein superfamilies and have fundamentally different catalytic mechanisms. Identical dehalogenases have repeatedly been detected in organisms that were isolated at different geographical locations, indicating that only a restricted number of sequences are used for a certain dehalogenation reaction in organohalogen-utilizing organisms.

High resolution X-ray microtomography (micro-CT) was used for the detection of emphysema in live mice. Emphysema was induced in C57BL/6 J mice by intratracheal instillation of different amounts of porcine pancreatic elastase. This emphysema could be clearly detected by micro-CT seven weeks post-treatment: analysis of the whole data set of virtual cross-sections showed the presence of a dose-dependent level of emphysema.

In the present study, the feasibility of applying high-resolution microtomography (micro-CT) for the detection of lung tumors was investigated in live mice at an early and more advanced stage of tumor development. The chest area of anesthesized mice was scanned by X-ray micro-CT. In mice with a minor and heavy tumor load, micro-CT proved to be a fast and noninvasive imaging device for the detection of lung tumors.

The biological activity of mainstream smoke from an electrically heated cigarette (EHC) with controlled combustion and from the University of Kentucky Reference Cigarette 1R4F was determined in Sprague Dawley rats exposed nose-only for 90 days, 6 h a day, 7 days per week. For an equivalent response comparison between the two cigarette types, two doses were chosen for the EHC where the anticipated results were in the dynamic range of the 1R4F dose-response curve (four concentrations) for most end points. The number of cigarettes smoked per m(3) of diluted smoke resulted in total particulate matter concentrations of 40 and 90 microg l (-1) for the EHC and 40-170 microg l (-1) for the 1R4F.

Muscle-type carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (M-CPT I) is a key enzyme in the control of beta-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids in the heart and skeletal muscle. Because knowledge of the mammalian genes encoding M-CPT I may aid in studies of disturbed energy metabolism, we obtained new genomic and cDNA data for M-CPT I for the human, mouse, rat, and sheep. The introns of these compact genes are 80% (mouse versus rat) and 60% (mouse versus human) identical.
