Clinical and treatment characteristics of secondary bladder malignancies following low dose rate brachytherapy for prostate cancer.

Purpose/objectives: To characterize the clinical course and prognosis of bladder malignancies associated with prior prostate brachytherapy SUBJECTS/PATIENTS AND METHODS: We queried our institutional database for patients with bladder cancer (BC) diagnosed between January 2005 and April 2019 who had previously undergone low dose rate (LDR) prostate brachytherapy. Patients diagnosed with BC at least 1 year following LDR prostate brachytherapy with or without external beam radiation therapy were included. Clinical and disease-specific characteristics were abstracted from chart review and survival outcomes were estimated using Kaplan-Meier estimates.

Salvage low dose rate brachytherapy for prostate cancer recurrence following definitive external beam radiation therapy.

Purpose: We sought to describe the safety and efficacy of salvage low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy for local prostate cancer recurrence following definitive RT.

Materials And Methods: We included patients from two prospectively maintained institutional databases who underwent salvage LDR brachytherapy for biopsy confirmed intra-prostatic recurrence following primary RT. All patients were without evidence of metastatic disease.

Initial results of a randomized phase III trial of high dose image guided radiation with or without androgen deprivation therapy for intermediate-risk prostate cancer.

Background: Prior randomized studies have shown a survival benefit using combined androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and radiation therapy for intermediate-risk prostate cancer. However, these studies either used low doses of radiation (66.6 Gy to isocenter) or imaged guidance was not available.

Prostate cancer: the influence of stigma on quality of life and relationship satisfaction for survivors and their partners.

Objectives: Prostate cancer (PCa) stigma and its relationship to quality of life (QoL) is a relatively new finding. As the experiences of couples facing PCa are shared, the study examined the relationship between of PCa stigma, QoL, and relationship satisfaction of PCa survivors and their spouses.

Design: A correlational design with dyadic data was used.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of stigma on prostate cancer (PCa) survivors' quality of life. Stigma for lung cancer survivors has been the focus of considerable research (Else-Quest & Jackson, 2014); however, gaps remain in understanding the experience of PCa stigma. A cross-sectional correlational study was designed to assess the incidence of PCa stigma and its influence on the quality of life of survivors.

Machine learning based analytics of micro-MRI trabecular bone microarchitecture and texture in type 1 Gaucher disease.

Type 1 Gaucher disease (GD) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease, affecting bone metabolism, structure and strength. Current bone assessment methods are not ideal. Semi-quantitative MRI scoring is unreliable, not standardized, and only evaluates bone marrow.

Diagnostic utility of MRI and MR arthrography for detection of ligamentum teres tears: a retrospective analysis of 187 patients with hip pain.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic utility of MRI and MR arthrography for ligamentum teres tears in patients with hip pain.

Materials And Methods: This is a retrospective study involving 187 patients who underwent MRI or MR arthrography for hip pain. This study included 103 male and 84 female patients with average age of 39 years.

Tarsal navicular bone size in diabetics: radiographic assessment.

Objective: To test the anecdotal observation that isolated navicular collapse is associated with diabetes mellitus, we quantified the size of the tarsal navicular bone in subjects with and without diabetes and tested for association of size with age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), gender, smoking, bone mineral density (BMD), duration, and level of control of diabetes.

Materials And Methods: Ankle radiographs of 200 patients (122 female; 78 male; mean age 58 years [27-89]), 100 with type II diabetes and 100 age- and gender-matched controls were selected and reviewed. The anteroposterior (AP) dimension of the mid-navicular bone was measured from lateral radiographs.

Salvage brachytherapy for recurrent prostate cancer.

Purpose: To evaluate the role of salvage prostate brachytherapy for locally recurrent prostate cancer after external beam radiation alone.

Methods And Materials: Sixty-nine consecutive patients treated with salvage brachytherapy after a local failure were analyzed. All patients were found to have pathologic proven recurrent prostate cancer at least 2 years after initial therapy and no regional or distant disease on imaging studies.

Radiological and clinical characterization of the lysosomal storage disorders: non-lipid disorders.

Lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) are a large group of genetic metabolic disorders that result in the accumulation of abnormal material, such as mucopolysaccharides, glycoproteins, amino acids and lipids, within cells. Since many LSDs manifest during infancy or early childhood, with potentially devastating consequences if left untreated, timely identification is imperative to prevent irreversible damage and early death. In this review, the key imaging features of the non-lipid or extralipid LSDs are examined and correlated with salient clinical manifestations and genetic information.

Radiographic evaluation of INBONE total ankle arthroplasty: a retrospective analysis of 30 cases.

Objectives: The objectives of this work were to retrospectively describe the radiographic assessment of INBONE total ankle arthroplasty in 30 patients using validated linear and angular measurements and to correlate these findings with the final surgical outcome over a 2-year follow-up period.

Materials And Methods: Thirty consecutive patients (21 females, nine males; mean age, 64.8 years) underwent INBONE total ankle arthroplasty during 2007-2011.

Background And Purpose: Rectal bleeding can occur following radiotherapy for prostate cancer and negatively impacts quality of life for cancer survivors. Treatment and clinical factors do not fully predict rectal bleeding, and genetic factors may be important.

Materials And Methods: A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed to identify SNPs associated with the development of late rectal bleeding following radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

Long-term outcomes and prognostic factors in patients treated with intraoperatively planned prostate brachytherapy.

Methods And Materials: A total of 3760 patients have undergone prostate seed implantation at our institution. This review is of our initial 304 consecutive patients treated before January 30, 2001.

A 2-stage genome-wide association study to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with development of erectile dysfunction following radiation therapy for prostate cancer.

Purpose: To identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with development of erectile dysfunction (ED) among prostate cancer patients treated with radiation therapy.

Methods And Materials: A 2-stage genome-wide association study was performed. Patients were split randomly into a stage I discovery cohort (132 cases, 103 controls) and a stage II replication cohort (128 cases, 102 controls).

Bilateral spontaneous rupture of the flexor digitorum superficialis and the flexor digitorum profundus in a diabetic patient.

Closed flexor tendon rupture is an unusual condition that has been described in association with distinct underlying disease processes. Several theories have been implicated in the pathogenesis, including labor-associated forceful usage, gender, and age. The effect of diabetes on the native tendon tissue is not yet fully understood; however, the metabolic perturbations of diabetes have been shown to result in detrimental changes to the musculoskeletal system.

MRI of the cuboid bone: analysis of changes in diabetic versus non-diabetic patients and their clinical significance.

Objectives: (1) To investigate the association between diabetes and marrow changes in the cuboid; and (2) to evaluate the influence of age, gender, body mass index (BMI) and use of insulin in the occurrence of marrow changes in the cuboid.

Research Design And Methods: MR and X-ray foot examinations of 237 patients [94 males, 143 females; mean age, 47.1 years (range 16-93 years)], five of whom underwent bilateral examinations, were reviewed.

The Guyon's canal in perspective: 3-T MRI assessment of the normal anatomy, the anatomical variations and the Guyon's canal syndrome.

Purposes: (1) To revisit the anatomical boundaries of the canal, its contents and its two channels, (2) to describe the anatomical variations of the canal's borders and the variations of its contents, and (3) to discuss the clinical relevance of the Guyon's canal syndrome.

Methods: Two hundred and fifty MR wrists examinations were reviewed. MR spin echo T1-weighted axial slices were used to analyze the Guyon's canal.

Tibial subacute osteomyelitis with intraosseous abscess: an unusual complication of intraosseous infusion.

Intravenous (IV) access is a critical step in patient care, especially in the emergency and/or trauma setting. Recently, intraosseous (IO) infusion has re-emerged as a recommended alternative to central venous access in both the pediatric and the adult patient. We present the case of an older adult male patient several months after emergency tibial IO infusion, now with left shin pain, and the MRI and culture findings diagnostic of subacute osteomyelitis with IO abscess, an unusual complication of IO infusion.

Interaction between dietary conjugated linoleic acid and calcium supplementation affecting bone and fat mass.

Dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has shown wide biologically beneficial effects, such as anticancer, antiatherosclerotic, antidiabetic, immunomodulating, and antiobesity effects. However, the effects of CLA on total body ash, reflective of bone mineral content, have not been consistent. We hypothesized that the inconsistency of the CLA effect on ash may be linked to interaction between CLA and dietary calcium levels.

MRI of the Achilles tendon: a comprehensive review of the anatomy, biomechanics, and imaging of overuse tendinopathies.

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body; it plays an important role in the biomechanics of the lower extremity. It can withstand great forces, especially during sporting exercises and pivoting. The pathologies related to the Achilles tendon are diverse and many carry undesirable consequences.

Analysis of the patellofemoral region on MRI: association of abnormal trochlear morphology with severe cartilage defects.

Objective: The objective of our study was to assess patellofemoral measurements on MRI and to correlate the measurements with different grades of cartilage defect.

Materials And Methods: Axial and sagittal MR images of 100 patients with various pathologic knee conditions were analyzed. The patients were divided into two age groups: < 40 years and > or = 40 years.

Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2-induced heterotopic ossification of the retroperitoneum, psoas muscle, pelvis and abdominal wall following lumbar spinal fusion.

A 45-year-old man presented with vertebral collapse at L5 as an initial manifestation of multiple myeloma and underwent spinal fusion surgery using recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2). Subsequent computed tomography (CT) scans and X-rays revealed heterotopic ossification of the left psoas muscle, pelvis, and anterior abdominal wall. While the occurrence of heterotopic ossification has previously been reported when rhBMP-2 has been used for spinal fusion surgery, this case demonstrates that it can occur to a much greater degree than previously seen.

MRI of the median nerve and median artery in the carpal tunnel: prevalence of their anatomical variations and clinical significance.

Objective: Anatomical variations of the median nerve and the persistent median artery (PMA) in the carpal tunnel (CT) are important to understand for their clinical and surgical significance. The aim of this cohort retrospective study was to investigate the prevalence of aberrant median nerve branches and persistent median artery in the CT in a selected population using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Materials And Methods: MR wrist images of 194 patients, 77 males and 117 females, aged 12-80 years were randomly selected and retrieved from our clinical and radiology data base.

Patella alta: lack of correlation between patellotrochlear cartilage congruence and commonly used patellar height ratios.

Objective: The purposes of this study were to assess the degree of patellotrochlear chondral overlap (patellotrochlear index), correlate it with the Insall-Salvati and modified Insall-Salvati indexes, and determine the association between these measurements and patellofemoral chondral defects.

Materials And Methods: Sagittal 1.5-T and 3-T MR images of 100 consecutively registered patients with symptoms were analyzed, and the Insall-Salvati index, modified Insall-Salvati index, patellotrochlear index, and patellophyseal index (ratio of the height of patella above the physeal line to the length of the patellar articular cartilage) were calculated.

Congenital absence of the semimembranosus muscle: case report.

Congenital anomalies of the muscles of the lower extremity are rare. A case of complete absence of the semimembranosus muscle incidentally found with magnetic resonance imaging is reported. The patient was a 55-year-old female presenting with knee pain and no previous history of trauma.
