Aims: Connecting cohorts with biobanks is a Finnish biobank collaboration, creating an infrastructure for the study of healthy ageing. We aimed to develop a model for data integration and harmonisation between different biobanks with procedures for joint access.
Methods: The heart of the collaboration is the integrated datasets formed by using data from three biobanks: (a) Arctic Biobank, hosting regional birth cohorts and cohorts of elderly; (b) hospital-affiliated Borealis Biobank of Northern Finland; and (c) THL Biobank, hosting population-based cohorts.
Objectives: To recontact biobank participants and collect cognitive, behavioural and lifestyle information via a secure online platform.
Design: Biobank-based recontacting pilot study.
Setting: Three Finnish biobanks (Helsinki, Auria, Tampere) recruiting participants from February 2021 to July 2021.

Background: This study investigated how annual caseloads and the surgeon's previous experience influence the outcome in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LCC) for acute cholecystitis.
Methods: A total of 892 patients treated in Helsinki University Hospital in 2013-2016 were retrospectively analyzed. Surgeons were compared regarding volume-over 5 LCCs for acute cholecystitis a year versus 5 or fewer LCCs a year, and experience-attendings versus residents.
Background: The purpose of the study was to identify risk factors for conversion of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and risk factors for postoperative complications in acute calculous cholecystitis. The most common complications arising from cholecystectomy were also to be identified.
Methods: A total of 499 consecutive patients, who had undergone emergent cholecystectomy with diagnosis of cholecystitis in Meilahti Hospital in 2013-2014, were identified from the hospital database.
Lysinuric protein intolerance (LPI) is an inherited aminoaciduria caused by recessive mutations in the SLC7A7 gene encoding y+L amino acid transporter 1 (y+LAT1), which combines with 4F2hc to generate an active transporter responsible for the system y+L amino acid transport. We have previously shown that the y+LAT1 proteins with point mutations are expressed in the plasma membrane, while those with frameshift mutations are retained in the cytoplasm. This finding has prompted us to study whether the difference in localization is due to the inability of the structurally altered mutant y+LAT1 proteins to heteromerize with 4F2hc.

When cellulose was coated with hydroxyapatite (HA), the sponges attracted circulating haemopoietic and mesenchymal progenitor cells more efficiently than uncoated cellulose. We hypothesized that the giant cells/macrophages of HA-coated sponges recognize HA as foreign material, phagocyte or hydrolyse it and release calcium ions, which are recognized by the calcium-sensing receptors (CaRs) expressed on many cells including haemopoietic progenitors.

Aiolos has also been reported to interact with anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-x(L) in T cells, but whether Aiolos regulates cell death has not been studied in B cells. Here we show that the disruption of Aiolos in the DT40 B cell line induces a cell death sensitive phenotype, as the Aiolos(-/-) cells are more prone to apoptosis by nutritional stress, BCR cross-linking, UV- or gamma-irradiation.

Pax5 is indispensable for the commitment of early lymphoid progenitors to the B cell lineage as well as for the development of B cells. The purpose of the study was to examine the response of the endoneurium of the rat sciatic nerve after removal of the epi- and perineurium. For this purpose, segments (4-5 mm long) of the whole epi- and perineurium around the rat sciatic nerve were microsurgically removed (the peel-off area) and the endoneurium was left intact. In the first part of the study WHO grade 2 tumours were analysed and a number of independent factors predictive for survival identified. In a multivariate analysis the T category and M/V index (number of mitotic figures/mm2 neoplastic epithelium) were the most important prognostic factors.
