Infections with Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) and Toxoplasma gondii (TG) have been implicated in severe mental illness. All three pathogens have high seroprevalence in the human population, are neurotropic and establish a persistent infection. In adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, CMV latent infection has been associated with cognitive disturbance including lower intelligent quotient (IQ). We hypothesized that the same pattern will be present in adolescent patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (early-onset non-affective psychosis).

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety disorders are the most frequent psychiatric disorders in children. Changes in rhythms of symptoms during the day may be influenced by genetic, biological and psychological factors.
