Microbiological and molecular identification of the anaerobic component of the oral microbiota in patients with cancer of the oropharyngeal region.

A research objective - to study tumor tissues of primary and recurrent patients with cancer of the oropharyngeal region for the frequency of occurrence of four types of anaerobic periodontogens and their associations by two methods: real-time PCR and cultural. There is speculation that bacteria can influence the pathogenesis of cancer. A comparative assessment of the content of four anaerobic periodontogens (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythensis, Treponema denticola) in the tumor tissue and in the healthy tissue of the oral mucosa of patients with oropharyngeal cancer was carried out.

The role of chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 1 (CHD1) in promoting an invasive prostate cancer phenotype.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) phenotypes vary from indolent to aggressive. Molecular subtyping may be useful in predicting aggressive cancers and directing therapy. One such subtype involving deletions of chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 1 (), a tumor suppressor gene, are found in 10-26% of PCa tumors.

Complex interactions between meteorological parameters and the thermal regime of two tropical, high altitude crater lakes (Nevado de Toluca, Mexico).

Using long-term time series of meteorological and water-column parameters, the dynamics of two lakes separated by about 500 m from each other by a central lava dome, located at 4207 m above sea level in the volcano crater of Nevado de Toluca, Mexico were explored. Because of the strong wind-forcing previously measured on the volcano slope and the proximity of the lakes, wind-mixing was expected, with similar dynamics in both lakes. However, the meteorological parameters in the crater were significantly different than on the slope of the volcano, due to the dome and the high walls of the crater, which weakened wind speeds, modified wind direction, and reduced exposure to solar radiation by almost 20% in the crater compared to on the volcano slope.

Natural Frequencies of seiches in Lake Chapala.

This research presents an analysis of the frequencies and vibration modes of the structure of the superficial seiches of Lake Chapala using mathematical modelling and measurements. The HAMSOM model was run with wind fields from coastal meteorological stations and for different lake storage levels. The lake water level measurements were carried out in two campaigns in 2003.

Correlation of Prostate Cancer CHD1 Status with Response to Androgen Deprivation Therapy: a Pilot Study.

Introduction: CHD1 has been identified as a tumor suppressor gene in prostate cancer. Previous studies have shown strong associations between CHD1 deletion, prostate specific antigen [PSA] recurrence, and absence of ERG fusion. In this preliminary study we seek to find whether there is an independent correlation between CHD1 status and response to androgen deprivation therapy[ADT].

An electrochemical cell with sapphire windows for operando synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and spectroscopy studies of high-power and high-voltage electrodes for metal-ion batteries.

A new multi-purpose operando electrochemical cell was designed, constructed and tested on the Swiss-Norwegian Beamlines BM01 and BM31 at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Single-crystal sapphire X-ray windows provide a good signal-to-noise ratio, excellent electrochemical contact because of the constant pressure between the electrodes, and perfect electrochemical stability at high potentials due to the inert and non-conductive nature of sapphire. Examination of the phase transformations in the LiFeMnPO positive electrode (cathode) material at C/2 and 10C charge and discharge rates, and a study of the valence state of the Ni cations in the LiNiMnO cathode material for Li-ion batteries, revealed the applicability of this novel cell design to diffraction and spectroscopic investigations of high-power/high-voltage electrodes for metal-ion batteries.

The Role of Semilabile Oxygen Atoms for Intercalation Chemistry of the Metal-Ion Battery Polyanion Cathodes.

Using the orthorhombic layered NaFePOF cathode material as a model system we identify the bonding of the alkali metal cations to the semilabile oxygen atoms as an important factor affecting electrochemical activity of alkali cations in polyanion structures. The semilabile oxygens, bonded to the P and alkali cations, but not included into the FeOF octahedra, experience severe undercoordination upon alkali cation deintercalation, causing an energy penalty for removing the alkali cations located in the proximity of such semilabile oxygens. Desodiation of NaFePOF proceeds through a two-phase mechanism in the Na-ion cell with a formation of an intermediate monoclinic NaFePOF phase with coupled Na/vacancy and Fe/Fe charge ordering at 50% state of charge.

[PITUITARY ADENOMA APOPLEXY].

We present 3 cases of pituitary adenoma apoplexy in young women (one microadenoma and two macroadenomas). The possible risk factors, clinical presentation and outcome of pituitary apoplexy are discussed. Diagnostic errors as regards pituitary adenoma apoplexy are analyzed.

[Adiponectin in health and disease].

Over the past 20 years after the discovery of adiponectin, much knowledge about its effect in health and disease has been gained. Adiponectin has antidiabetic, antiatherogenic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, metabolic, vasoprotective, and antiapoptotic properties. However, an understanding stems from the given literature review that much remains to be explored.

A Phase II Study of AT-101 to Overcome Bcl-2--Mediated Resistance to Androgen Deprivation Therapy in Patients With Newly Diagnosed Castration-Sensitive Metastatic Prostate Cancer.

Unlabelled: In a phase II multicenter study, men with castration sensitive metastatic prostate cancer were treated with AT-101, a small molecule Bcl-2 inhibitor, and androgen deprivation therapy. At the end of 7 cycles of therapy in 55 patients, an undetectable PSA was achieved in 31%. However, the combination did not meet the pre-specified level of activity for further development.

[The concurrence of diabetes mellitus and gallstone disease].

The article presents an update on the concurrence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and gallstone disease (GSD), on the mechanisms for the development of GSD in patients with type 2 DM (T2DM), on the risk factors of DM in GSD. The role of diabetic autonomic neuropathy of the gallbladder in the development of cholelithiasis is assessed in patients with T2DM. The impact of impaired secretion of neurohormones in the gastrointestinal tract in the development of DM in GSD is analyzed.

[Comparative analysis of the changing pattern of thyroid disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Perm region after 10 years].

Aim: To comparatively analyze thyroid abnormalities in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) in the past 10 years.

Subjects And Methods: The thyroid state 10 years ago and presently was evaluated in 166 and 101 patient with DM2, respectively. The patients underwent in-depth physical examination and thyroid hormone functions were evaluated.

[Thyroid dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus].

The paper gives an update on type 2 diabetes mellitus concurrent with thyroid dysfunction and on the development of vascular events, atherogenesis and evaluates the impact of therapy on the course of both diseases. It points out the need for annual screening for thyroid dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

ERG and CHD1 heterogeneity in prostate cancer: use of confocal microscopy in assessment of microscopic foci.

Background: Biomarkers predicting tumor response are important to emerging targeted therapeutics. Complimentary methods to assess and understand genetic changes and heterogeneity within only few cancer cells in tissue will be a valuable addition for assessment of tumors such as prostate cancer that often have insufficient tumor for next generation sequencing in a single biopsy core.

Methods: Using confocal microscopy to identify cell-to-cell relationships in situ, we studied the most common gene rearrangement in prostate cancer (TMPRSS2 and ERG) and the tumor suppressor CHD1 in 56 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy.

The role of the ghrelin--obestatin system in health and disease is multifaceted and new ample evidence has been recently accumulated. Ghrelin was discovered much earlier than obestatin so the biological, physiological and pathophysiological, pharmacological aspects of its activity could be studied far better than obestatin. There is no question that these hormones are not antagonists and they are a uniform system.

Enrichment of human prostate cancer cells with tumor initiating properties in mouse and zebrafish xenografts by differential adhesion.

Background: Prostate tumor-initiating cells (TICs) have intrinsic resistance to current therapies. TICs are commonly isolated by cell sorting or dye exclusion, however, isolating TICs from limited primary prostate cancer (PCa) tissues is inherently inefficient. We adapted the collagen adherence feature to develop a combined immunophenotypic and time-of-adherence assay to identify human prostate TICs.

[Ghrelin secretion in patients, operated on cholelithiasis].

The grelin blood level was measured on 54 patients, of whom 18 were healthy volunteers; 20 patients with cholecystolithiasis had been measured perioperatively during the cholecystectomy; and the rest 16 patients of the study group had had cholecystectomy 2-15 years ago. All patients demonstrated perioperative hypergrelinemy with the normalization of the grelin level during the long-term follow-up. Grelin is considered to have certain immunomodulating and anti-inflammatory effects, thus improving the postoperative regeneration.

Ionizing radiation is a potent inducer of mitotic recombination in mouse embryonic stem cells.

Maintenance of genomic integrity in embryonic cells is pivotal to proper embryogenesis, organogenesis and to the continuity of species. Cultured mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs), a model for early embryonic cells, differ from cultured somatic cells in their capacity to remodel chromatin, in their repertoire of DNA repair enzymes, and in the regulation of cell cycle checkpoints. Using 129XC3HF1 mESCs heterozygous for Aprt, we characterized loss of Aprt heterozygosity after exposure to ionizing radiation.

CCL5/RANTES gene polymorphisms in Slavonic patients with myocardial infarction.

Coronary artery inflammation is a critical process in the pathogenesis of myocardial infarction (MI). The chemokine CCL5/RANTES (regulated upon activation, normal T cells expressed and secreted) is expressed in advanced atherosclerotic lesions. Functional polymorphisms of the RANTES gene can, therefore, be involved in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease.

[Involvement of the organ of vision in Horton's disease].

The paper deals with the diagnosis of optic nerve atrophy caused by temporal giant-cell arteritis (Horton's disease) and shows how difficult to make a differential diagnosis between glaucoma and other non-eye diseases that also induce optic nerve atrophy. It describes a clinical case that illustrates the difficulties in diagnosing optic nerve involvement in Horton's disease.
