Article Synopsis
  • The genetic mechanisms of sex determination in teleost fishes are diverse, and the key sex-determining gene has only been found in a few species.
  • A specific male-associated region of 9 kb on linkage group 11 in Atlantic cod has been identified, containing the gene zkY, which is unique to the Y chromosome and is linked to male sex determination.
  • Comparisons with other cod species indicate that this male-specific region has been present for over 7.5 million years, suggesting zkY could be a significant gene for masculinization in Atlantic cod.

Preterm infants are susceptible to neonatal inflammatory/infective diseases requiring drug therapy. The present study hypothesized that mRNA expression in the blood may be modulated by signaling pathways during treatment. The current study aimed to explore changes in global gene expression in the blood from preterm infants with the objective of identifying patterns or pathways of potential relevance to drug therapy.
