The EUPEMEN (EUropean PErioperative MEdical Networking) Protocol for Bowel Obstruction: Recommendations for Perioperative Care.

Mechanical bowel obstruction is a common symptom for admission to emergency services, diagnosed annually in more than 300,000 patients in the States, from whom 51% will undergo emergency laparotomy. This condition is associated with serious morbidity and mortality, but it also causes a high financial burden due to long hospital stay. The EUPEMEN project aims to incorporate the expertise and clinical experience of national clinical specialists into development of perioperative rehabilitation protocols.

Corporoplasty under local anesthesia: Cost-effective improvement of the surgical treatment of Peyronie's disease.

Introduction And Objectives: Peyronie's disease produces penile curvature that leads, in certain cases, to difficulties in having satisfactory sexual relations. The objective of this study is to evaluate the functional and cost-effectiveness results obtained in the surgical treatment of penile curvature due to Peyronie's disease under local anesthesia, comparing them with those performed under a general-spinal anesthesia regimen.

Material And Methods: Two groups of patients undergoing corporoplasty are compared according to the type of anesthesia used.

Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been widely described as the cause for a proinflammatory and hypercoagulable state. The inflammatory process involving the alveolar vascular endothelium in the respiratory system, is a determining factor for the onset of primary Pulmonary Artery Thrombosis (PAT) even in patients with heparin prophylactic treatment. Little is known about the efficacy of the anticoagulant therapy during the course of PAT caused by COVID-19.

Comparative assessment for rat strain differences in metabolic profiles of 14 drugs in Wistar Han and Sprague Dawley hepatocytes.

Knowledge of inter-strain and inter-gender differences in drug metabolism studies is important for animal selection in pharmacokinetic and toxicological studies. The effects of rat strain and gender in metabolism were investigated in Sprague Dawley (SD) and Wister Han (WH) rats based on the hepatocyte metabolic profiles of 14 small molecule drugs. Similarities were found between the hepatocyte metabolic clearances of SD and WH strains, suggesting that only one strain can be confidently used for the evaluation of hepatic clearance.

Phenotyping of CYP 4501A2 Activity by Total Overnight Salivary Caffeine Assessment (TOSCA) in Patients on Warfarin Treatment: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Warfarin is an oral anticoagulant, commonly used for primary and secondary prevention of venous and arterial thromboembolic events. The drug is characterized by narrow therapeutic index, widespread individual variability in clinical response, and high rates of adverse events, particularly bleeding complications. For these reasons, a close monitoring of the dosage, using the frequent assessment of coagulation status by means of International Normalized Ratio value, is mandatory.

Cutinase promotes dry esterification of cotton cellulose.

Cutinase from Thermobifida fusca was used to esterify the hydroxyl groups of cellulose with the fatty acids from triolein. Cutinase and triolein were pre-adsorbed on cotton and the reaction proceeded in a dry state during 48 h at 35°C. The cutinase-catalyzed esterification of the surface of cotton fabric resulted in the linkage of the oleate groups to the glycoside units of cotton cellulose.

Antenatally diagnosed congenital cystic adenomatoid malformations (CCAM): Research Review.

Prenatal identification of lung abnormalities has increased with prenatal surveillance. With the advent of improved antenatal imaging over the past ten years, the diagnosis, assessment and management of congenital cystic lung abnormalities have changed. These were once considered the exclusive domain of the surgeon, who had the authority to operate on all congenital cystic lung abnormalities regardless of size or clinical signs in order to avoid the risk of cancer and improve lung growth in even asymptomatic infants.

Isolated tuberculous orchitis: A mimicker of testicular malignancy.

Isolated tuberculous orchitis is a rare entity. The coexistence of tuberculosis of the testis with filarial worm infestation is even more rare. In this report, we present a case of tuberculous involvement of the testis, associated with filarial worm infestation in the spermatic cord that presented as a testicular tumor.

Effect of sodium metabisulphite on germination, growth and yield of Vigna sinensis, Savi.

In the present study, the impact of sodium metabisulphite (Na2S2O5), a food preservative, on seed germination, growth and yield of Vigna sinensis, Savi has been evaluated. Observations clearly reveal the deleterious effect of Na2S2O5 on germination, stomatal development, stomatal index, chlorophyll content and yield. The shoot length exhibited a steady rise in length, while the biomass showed a gradual decrease with the increasing doses of Na2S2O5.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the skin with marked inflammatory infiltrate: a sarcoma mimicking malignant lymphoma.

Three cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the skin with a marked inflammatory infiltrate in the stroma are reported. The inflammatory infiltrate, composed mainly of T-lymphocytes, obscured the nature of the neoplasms, and immunohistochemical studies were required to establish the diagnosis. Two tumors arose in the sun-damaged skin of the face, and one tumor arose in the chest wall.

Polymer characterization by size-exclusion chromatography with multiple detection.

Size-exclusion chromatography with coupled multiangle light scattering and differential refractometry detectors has been used to obtain molecular mass and radius of gyration distributions of polydisperse polymer samples. From these data the scaling law between dimensions and the absolute molecular mass is obtained with just one sample of each polymer. Three different kinds of polymers are presented: polystyrene which serves as reference polymer, polyphosphazenes which behave abnormally in solution and poly(ethylene oxide) which is soluble in water.

The quantification of potassium using a quartz crystal microbalance.

N,N'-dibenzyl-4,13-diaza-18-crown-6 (A) and bis[(benzo-15-crown-5)-4'-ylmethyl] pimelate (B) were tested as coatings for two piezoelectric crystals for potassium quantification. Both sensors showed stability, reversibility and sensitivity characteristics that allowed their use in quantitative analysis. However, compound A is much more sensitive to potassium than B.

Single-step purification of recombinant human growth hormone (hGH) directly from bacterial osmotic shock fluids, for the purpose of (125)I-hGH preparation.

A good quality tracer, to be used in the radioimmunoassay of human growth hormone, was prepared by applying the chloramine-T iodination technique to the recombinant product obtained after a single-step high-performance size-exclusion chromatography purification of a bacterial osmotic shock fluid. The labeling reaction presented a yield of about 65% and the purified tracer exhibited an antibody binding of approximately 50% (NIDDK reference antiserum diluted 1:600,000). These values are very similar to those obtained by radioiodinating highly purified clinical-grade recombinant human growth hormone obtained from the same periplasmic extract after the regular six-step purification process.

Evolution of insulin resistance in coronary artery disease patients on four different pharmacological therapies.

The objective of the study was to examine the evolution of insulin sensitivity in a group of patients with stable coronary artery disease receiving one of four different pharmacological therapies. Insulin sensitivity was evaluated using an insulin suppression test in 40 newly diagnosed patients with coronary artery disease and no previous history of metabolic disorders, who were not taking any medication which might affect insulin sensitivity. The insulin suppression test consisted of a constant infusion of glucose, insulin and somatostatin for 150 min; insulin resistance was estimated by determining the steady-state plasma glucose concentrations during the last 60 minutes of the test.

Relationship between insulin sensitivity and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate in patients with ischemic heart disease.

Insulin resistance has been related to the pathogenesis and development of ischemic heart disease (IHD). Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) has been suggested as the possible link between these two entities. The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between insulin resistance and DHEA-S in patients with IHD.

Trace element concentrations in blood and hair of young apprentices of a technical-professional school.

The concentrations of total Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni and Ca in the whole blood of young male apprentices of a technical-professional school, who are exposed to low doses of fumes from manual metal arc welding of mild steel, were monitored over their 2 years of apprenticeship in order to evaluate the influence of occupational exposure on biological metal levels. The results were compared with those from a control group of the same sex and age and living in the same geographic area. For comparison, monitoring of the same metal levels in the hair of both groups of individuals were also carried out.

[Isolation and identification of the infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus in a bovine fetus kidney (IBR/IPV)].

The authors describe the isolation and identification of a virus from bovine fetal kidney cells maintained in culture for 30 to 45 days. The virus was characterized as a herpesvirus of the infectious bovine rhinotracheitis in cell culture by the evidence of cytopathogenic effect in bovine kidney and testis cultures and serologically by a neutralization test using rabbit anti-infectious bovine rhinotracheitis sera.
