Article Synopsis
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects a significant portion of the population and is linked to cardiovascular issues like heart failure and ACVD, requiring analysis of its prevalence and related risk factors.
  • A study involving over 6,500 participants aged 18 to 102 revealed a crude CKD prevalence of approximately 11.5%, with a slightly lower adjusted rate of 9.2%, and highlighted that factors like hypertension and diabetes are significantly associated with CKD.
  • The findings indicated that a majority (77.5%) of CKD patients face very high cardiovascular risk, emphasizing the need for awareness and management of linked health conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Prediabetes poses a significant public health challenge, with the SIMETAP-PRED study aiming to investigate its prevalence based on two diagnostic criteria and assess associated health risks.
  • The study found crude prevalence rates of prediabetes at 7.9% using the Spanish Diabetes Society criteria and 22.0% using the American Diabetes Association criteria, with high cardiovascular risk prevalent in about two-thirds of the population.
  • Various risk factors, including hypertension and obesity, were linked to prediabetes, with the ADA criteria being simpler and identifying a higher prevalence compared to the SDS criteria.

Aim: To determine the crude and sex- and age-adjusted prevalence rates of atherogenic dyslipidemia (AD) and low HDL-cholesterol levels (low-HDLc), and to assess their associations with cardiovascular risk factors, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases.

Methods: Population-based cross-sectional study conducted in Primary Care, with randomly selected adult subjects. The AD was considered if the patients had hypertriglyceridemia (triglycerides≥150mg/dL) and low-HDLc (<40mg/dL [men];<50mg/dL [women]).
