The anesthetic management of patients undergoing cardiac surgery on cardiopulmonary bypass can be challenging. Contact of blood with extracorporeal surfaces results in altered coagulational integrity and increased risk of bleeding. Patients with preexisting bleeding disorders are particularly vulnerable.
