Artificial intelligence (AI) and Augmented Intelligence (AuI) have existed for decades but have only recently been applied to dentistry and incorporated into higher education for dental professionals. Early examples of the incorporation of AI into dental education suggest it can enhance students' learning and can be applied in pre-clinical and clinical instruction. AI can be used to support clinical decision-making for dental professionals, making radiographic interpretation more precise and consistent.

A well-prepared dental workforce is critical to improving the oral health of special needs patients. This paper, originally presented at the National Coalition Consensus Conference: Oral Health of Vulnerable Older Adults and Persons with Disabilities, reviews and suggests opportunities to enhance the professional education of the dental workforce, including enhanced faculty training in gerontology, geriatrics and special patient care, and opportunities for improved curricula and team training both within the dental team and among the diverse group of health professional that often collaborate in the care of special needs patients. Other considerations include the creation of a specialty of Special Care Dentistry, and the effective use of dental team members in the care of special needs patients.

Topical anesthetics are found in a variety of prescription and non-prescription preparations, from teething gels to hemorrhoid creams. In 2003, there were 8576 exposures to local/topical anesthetics reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, with 67% of cases in the age group younger than 6 years old. This report reviews the available literature involving topical anesthetic exposures in children younger than 6 years old, including the National Library of Medicine's Pub Med database (limited to English language) and data from POISINDEX.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in quality of life impacts between subjects treated with Invisalign aligners (Align Technology, Santa Clara, Calif) and those with fixed appliances during the first week of orthodontic treatment.

Methods: A prospective, longitudinal cohort study involving 60 adult orthodontic patients (33 with Invisalign aligners, 27 with fixed appliances) was completed by using a daily diary to measure treatment impacts including functional, psychosocial, and pain-related outcomes. A baseline survey was completed before the start of treatment; diary entries were made for 7 consecutive days to measure various impacts of the subjects' orthodontic treatment over time.

Over the last decade, online continuing dental education (CDE) has seen a major transformation in the way it is delivered, marketed, and accessed. The University of Florida College of Dentistry (UFCD) developed and evaluated a web-based CDE format ("Case of the Month") that specifically focused on clinical oral pathology. Over a four-month period, three oral pathology cases were presented monthly (a total of twelve cases overall) using a clinical pathologic conference format including a brief patient history, along with pictures and radiographs needed to make a treatment diagnosis.

A case study is used to illustrate how an evaluation strategy was used to assess classroom instructional practices following a multiyear institutional curriculum revision process. From January through April of 2003, twelve faculty in medicine and three faculty in dentistry who taught in the first- and second-year basic science courses within the dental curriculum participated in a qualitative study. The purpose was to use a formative evaluation process to assess the impact of the curriculum revision at the level of classroom instruction.

Methods: The systematic review was conducted with the aid of a structured template, a companion explanatory guide, and a grading and methodological scoring system based on published criteria for critical appraisal.
