Preparing the Next Generation of Clinicians for Practice Using Augmented and Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and Augmented Intelligence (AuI) have existed for decades but have only recently been applied to dentistry and incorporated into higher education for dental professionals. Early examples of the incorporation of AI into dental education suggest it can enhance students' learning and can be applied in pre-clinical and clinical instruction. AI can be used to support clinical decision-making for dental professionals, making radiographic interpretation more precise and consistent.

Adopting artificial intelligence in dental education: A model for academic leadership and innovation.

Introduction: The continual evolution of dental education, dental practice and the delivery of optimal oral health care is rooted in the practice of leadership. This paper explores opportunities and challenges facing dental education with a specific focus on incorporating the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Methods: Using the model in Bolman and Deal's Reframing Organizations, the Four Frames model serves as a road map for building infrastructure within dental schools for the adoption of AI.

Professional education to meet the oral health needs of older adults and persons with disabilities.

A well-prepared dental workforce is critical to improving the oral health of special needs patients. This paper, originally presented at the National Coalition Consensus Conference: Oral Health of Vulnerable Older Adults and Persons with Disabilities, reviews and suggests opportunities to enhance the professional education of the dental workforce, including enhanced faculty training in gerontology, geriatrics and special patient care, and opportunities for improved curricula and team training both within the dental team and among the diverse group of health professional that often collaborate in the care of special needs patients. Other considerations include the creation of a specialty of Special Care Dentistry, and the effective use of dental team members in the care of special needs patients.

Dental school deans' perceptions of the organizational culture and impact of the ELAM program on the culture and advancement of women faculty.

In 2006, deans of the sixty-four U.S. and Canadian dental schools were surveyed to gain their perspectives on their institutions' organizational culture for faculty, family-friendly policies, processes used by deans to develop faculty leadership, and the impact of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.

Enterprise-wide implementation of digital radiography in oral and maxillofacial imaging: the University of Florida Dentistry System.

The implementation of digital radiography in dentistry in a large healthcare enterprise setting is discussed. A distinct need for a dedicated dental picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) exists for seamless integration of different vendor products across the system. Complex issues are contended with as each clinical department migrated to a digital environment with unique needs and workflow patterns.

Are one or two dangerous? Lidocaine and topical anesthetic exposures in children.

Topical anesthetics are found in a variety of prescription and non-prescription preparations, from teething gels to hemorrhoid creams. In 2003, there were 8576 exposures to local/topical anesthetics reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, with 67% of cases in the age group younger than 6 years old. This report reviews the available literature involving topical anesthetic exposures in children younger than 6 years old, including the National Library of Medicine's Pub Med database (limited to English language) and data from POISINDEX.

A comparison of treatment impacts between Invisalign aligner and fixed appliance therapy during the first week of treatment.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in quality of life impacts between subjects treated with Invisalign aligners (Align Technology, Santa Clara, Calif) and those with fixed appliances during the first week of orthodontic treatment.

Methods: A prospective, longitudinal cohort study involving 60 adult orthodontic patients (33 with Invisalign aligners, 27 with fixed appliances) was completed by using a daily diary to measure treatment impacts including functional, psychosocial, and pain-related outcomes. A baseline survey was completed before the start of treatment; diary entries were made for 7 consecutive days to measure various impacts of the subjects' orthodontic treatment over time.

University of Florida College of Dentistry's "Case of the Month": Evaluating a web-based continuing dental education course for clinical oral pathology.

Over the last decade, online continuing dental education (CDE) has seen a major transformation in the way it is delivered, marketed, and accessed. The University of Florida College of Dentistry (UFCD) developed and evaluated a web-based CDE format ("Case of the Month") that specifically focused on clinical oral pathology. Over a four-month period, three oral pathology cases were presented monthly (a total of twelve cases overall) using a clinical pathologic conference format including a brief patient history, along with pictures and radiographs needed to make a treatment diagnosis.

Access to dental care among older adults in the United States.

Oral health is essential to an older adult's general health and well-being. Yet, many older adults are not regular users of dental services and may experience significant barriers to receiving necessary dental care. This literature review summarizes national trends in access to dental care and dental service utilization by older adults in the United States.

A case study examining classroom instructional practices at a U.S. dental school.

A case study is used to illustrate how an evaluation strategy was used to assess classroom instructional practices following a multiyear institutional curriculum revision process. From January through April of 2003, twelve faculty in medicine and three faculty in dentistry who taught in the first- and second-year basic science courses within the dental curriculum participated in a qualitative study. The purpose was to use a formative evaluation process to assess the impact of the curriculum revision at the level of classroom instruction.

Preventive care in the emergency department: should emergency departments conduct routine HIV screening? a systematic review.

Objective: To perform a systematic review of the emergency medicine literature to assess the appropriateness of offering routine HIV screening to patients in the emergency department (ED).

Methods: The systematic review was conducted with the aid of a structured template, a companion explanatory guide, and a grading and methodological scoring system based on published criteria for critical appraisal. Two reviewers conducted independent searches using OvidR, PubMed, MD Consult, and Grateful Med.
