Biochar is a carbon-rich product generated from biomass through pyrolysis. This study evaluated the ability of an unmodified biochar to sorb two triazine pesticides - atrazine and simazine, and thereby explored potential environmental values of biochar on mitigating pesticide pollution in agricultural production and removing contaminants from wastewater. A greenwaste biochar was produced by heating waste biomass under the oxygen-limited condition at 450 degrees C.

U.S. EPA Method 8330 was evaluated and modified for the analysis of DNAN (2,4-dinitroanisole) and MNA (n-methyl-p-nitroaniline) by high-performance liquid chromatography in various aqueous media in the presence and absence of the 14 energetic compounds currently assigned to the method.

Aim: Interactions between different determinants of alpha-thalassemia raises considerable problems, particularly during pregnancies where antenatal diagnosis is necessary. This study aims to determine the different types of deletional alpha-thalassemia and Hemoglobin Constant Spring (HbCS), and their frequency in Malays, Chinese and Indians in Malaysia.

Methods: DNA from 650 pregnant women from the Antenatal Clinic of the University of Malaya Medical Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia who showed mean cell volume < or =89 fL and/or mean cell hemoglobin < or =28 pg were analyzed for the double alpha-globin gene South-East Asian deletion (--SEA), the -alpha3.

The use of solid-phase extraction for the analysis of liquid media containing low microg/L levels of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), mononitroso-RDX (MNX), dinitroso-RDX (DNX), and trinitroso-RDX (TNX) is examined. Aqueous samples (100 mL) consisting of water and a microbiological basal medium are spiked with known concentrations of RDX, MNX, DNX, and TNX. The compounds are extracted from the liquid media using a Porapak RDX cartridge and then eluted from the cartridge with 5 mL of acetonitrile.

A nonconsanguineous asymptomatic couple, were identified as carriers of factor VII (FVII) deficiency when two of their newborn children died of massive intracranial hemorrhage secondary to severe congenital FVII deficiency. Complete sequence analysis of the factor VII (F7) gene in this couple indicated that the mother was heterozygous for an A to G transition at position -2 of the exon 5 acceptor splice site, and the father was heterozygous for a G to T transversion at position +1 of the exon 6 donor splice site. This information allowed us to exclude a compound heterozygous deficiency state in a subsequent pregnancy using PCR/direct sequencing of the F7 gene using DNA obtained from chorionic villi at 10 weeks' gestation.

This pilot study was carried out to find the feasibility of analyzing the maturity of the fetal lung using ultrasound images. Data were collected from normal pregnant women at intervals of two weeks from the gestation age of 24 to 38 weeks. Images were acquired at two centers located at different geographical locations.
