The main task of the military medical service in the area of work to eliminate the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster was to organize and carry out sanitary and hygienic measures aimed at preventing radiation exposure to liquidators-military personnel in excess of the established dose limits and the emergence of mass infectious and non-infectious diseases. The necessity of development of a new scientific branch--Radiological geography--is proved. The definition of the branch is given. Its subject aims and major tasks are considered.

[The analysis of the medical demographic processes in the Krasnodar Kray].

The results of analysis of the medical demographic indicators from 1990 to 2006 in the Krasnodar Kray are presented. The data provides an opportunity to develop the practical suggestions to enhance the population life quality and to elaborate the efficacious measures for preventing mortality and developing favorable conditions for fertility increase. The comparative indicators of birth rate and death rate dynamics are presented.

[Prophylaxis of smoking among military personnel].

The article presents methodical approaches to prophylaxis of smoking in troops, carried out at different levels. The problem of smoking prophylaxis cannot be resolved only by forces of medical service. Intensive support of by command is necessary to succeed the efforts in lowering of the level of smoking.

[Influence of thermolabile lethal toxin of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis on development of sea urchin embryos and biosynthesis of DNA and RNA in embryonic cells].

Influence of thermolabile lethal toxin of Y. pseudotuberculosis on the development of embryos of sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus intermedius) and on biosynthesis of nucleic acids in embryonic cells was studied. Thermolabile lethal toxin affected metabolic processes of cells by inhibiting DNA and RNA synthesis.

[Quality of life of elderly people living in the rural region].

The article presents information about the investigation which has been passed in municipal establishment "Severskiy rayon" (Krasnodar region) for determination of life's quality of the middle-aged citizens who lives in the rural area. The investigation was carried out by international methodology which opens new opportunities for complex estimation of health and quality of life of elderly people.

[Thymidine and thymidylate kinases from the scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis gonads].

Thymidine and thymidylate kinases were isolated from the gonads of scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis. The enzymes were purified 537- and 100-fold, respectively, and were free of phosphatase and ATPase impurities. Ions of bivalent metals and ATP were necessary for both the nucleoside and nucleotide kinase activities; the pH optimum fall into the range of 7.

[Yersinia pseudotuberculosis nucleoside-kinase].

Enzyme capable of catalyzing the phosphorylation of thymidine and uridine was isolated from Y. pseudotuberculosis cells by fractionation with the use of ammonium sulfate, ion exchange and affinity chromatography. The degree of purification of thymidine- and uridine-kinase was approximately 350 times, and at all stages of isolation the activity of both nucleoside-kinases was detected in the same peaks.

[The action of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis heat stable lethal toxin on the biosynthesis of protein in vitro].

The results of the in vitro action of Y. pseudotuberculosis heat stable lethal toxin on the biosynthesis of protein are presented. The toxin was shown to inhibit the inclusion of exogenous amino acid into newly synthesized peptides.

[DNA, RNA, and protein biosynthesis in cells of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis at various cultivation temperatures].

Y. pseudotuberculosis cells cultivated at temperatures of 37 degrees C and 8 degrees C were found to be capable of incorporating exogenic precursors into DNA, RNA and protein. The linear growth of thymidine incorporation occurred during 8 hours of cultivation at 37 degrees C, then the amount of the incorporated label decreased.

[Improvement in the system of checking and assessing the physical fitness of military physicians].

Problematic questions of physical training and physical fitness of military physicians are described in this article. The results of studies and estimation of the existing system of physical training of military physicians are depicted. Optimal fitness norms are recommended for MOS "Military physician".

[The information value of biotesting and chemiluminescence methods in evaluating drinking water quality].

The article studies the informative value of test objects for the evaluation of potable water which contains toxic substances. A number of test objects is proposed by the authors to estimate the chemical harmlessness of water: tetrachimens, Daphnia and peroxide ferment system. The data obtained with the help of test-objects possess a sufficient selective sensibility as far as maximum allowable concentration of various toxic substances is concerned.

[The improvement of the information activities in the system of the health and hygiene support for the troops].

The system of information on health care measures in the Armed Forces of Russian Federation needs to be improved and developed. The aims and contents of record documentation must be reoriented from the tasks of uninterrupted extensive control over environmental conditions to the intensive study of health status in military units. It is desirable that the system of information support in the Ministry of Defence should be more open and accessible for other ministries and institutions occupied with environmental protection.

[Thymidine kinase from sea urchin oocytes].

Thymidine kinase was isolated and purified 1600-fold from sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus intermedius) oocytes. The molecular mass of the enzyme is 66 kDa, pI is 5.2.
