Objectives: To clarify the pathophysiological significance of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in monocytes, we examined the effect of its blockade on tissue factor and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) synthesis in human cultured monocytes.
Methods: Monocytes were isolated from healthy volunteers and cultured. Tissue factor and PAI-1 antigens in culture medium and cells were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blotting, and mRNA levels were assessed by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction.

Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) promotes proliferation of neuroprogenitor cells in culture and is up-regulated within brain after injury. Using mice genetically deficient in FGF-2 (FGF-2(-/-) mice), we addressed the importance of endogenously generated FGF-2 on neurogenesis within the hippocampus, a structure involved in spatial, declarative, and contextual memory, after seizures or ischemic injury. BrdUrd incorporation was used to mark dividing neuroprogenitor cells and NeuN expression to monitor their differentiation into neurons.

At 1 week of age, the mandibular condyle was undeveloped, and only a few collagen fibrils were recognizable in the subintimal layer of the synovium. At 8 weeks, the mandibular condyle was structurally developed with an increase of collagen fibrils in the synovium; a fully mature condyle was observed at 6 months of age.

Seven patients with lower rectal cancer were treated in this way with a satisfactory outcome in each case, and on the basis of this limited study, we suggest that extension of laparoscopy to the treatment of very low rectal lesions may be of advantage.

An 80-year-old woman who had been inplanted with an expandable metallic stent (EMS) to prevent obstruction by a large common bile duct stone about two years before as an emergency measure in another hospital, was afficted with acute occlusive pyogenic cholangitis (AOPC) and hospitalized in our hospital. After treating the AOPC, we successfully removed the EMS with a cholangioscope and normal biopsy forceps through the percutaneous transhepatic channel under fluoroscopy.

Background: Bronchial asthma is associated with abnormal autonomic nervous function in childhood. Exercise is one of the most common precipitating factors of acute asthmatic crises although the exact mechanism of autonomic regulation in asthmatic children after exercise is unclear.
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the features of autonomic regulation after exercise in asthmatic and control children.
Background: Several studies have shown that interleukin (IL)-4 and interferon-gamma (IFNgamma) are important for the regulation of IgE production and that IL-12 induces IFNgamma.
Objective: IFNgamma production in response to IL-12 stimulation and IL-12 production were investigated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of atopic patients with various levels of serum IgE.
Methods: Cytokine production from PBMCs was measured following stimulation with a nonspecific stimulator (phytohemagglutinin: PHA), a specific stimulator (Der f 1) and IL-12 in 17 healthy controls and 23 atopic patients with various serum IgE levels.

The effects of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in X-linked childhood adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) are described in four Japanese patients. Two older patients, 10-year-old boys with IQ 60 and difficulty in school, had favourable results. IQ levels and MRI findings were generally maintained after BMT.

In order to study the mechanism of xanthoma formation observed in apo E deficient patients, we evaluated the effect of VLDL and HDL from the patient on cholesterol ester (CE) accumulation in macrophages. The results showed that there was no difference in CE formation in macrophages among normal VLDL, the patient's VLDL and apo E containing VLDL, which was prepared by incubation of the patient's VLDL with recombinant apo E.

We investigated time courses of urinary leukotriene E4 (LTE4), serum thromboxane B2 (TXB2) and serum ECP, together with blood eosinophil count during asthmatic attacks in five children. Just after the onset of an asthma attack, urinary LTE4 levels reflected the severity of the attack and decreased during the course of clinical improvement with various therapies; however, they did not change in the course of an attack in one of five patients.
