Objectives: To determine the association between telomere length (TL) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and examine the potential variations with sex and ethnicity.
Methods: Population-based, cross-sectional study. A total of 52,083 participants from the UK Biobank were included.
Burnout is a prevalent phenomenon in medicine, affecting >50% of physicians and up to 60% of medical residents. This has negative consequences for both doctors' mental health and job satisfaction as well as patient care quality. While numerous studies have explored the causes, psychological effects, and workplace solutions, we aim to practicalize the issue from the perspectives of residents by discussing three key drivers of burnout and offering actionable, multipronged strategies that may be able to tackle these root causes effectively.

The effect of LLD was determined for each stratum of 20 complement genetic variants. In SEED, 484 individuals developed AMD and 216 showed progression over 6 years.

Less is known about the association of air pollution with initial development of cardiovascular disease. Herein, the association between low-level exposure to air pollutants and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis in adults without known clinical cardiovascular disease was investigated.

In medical training and practice, our professional attributes, attitudes, perceptions, character traits and identities are fundamentally shaped by our lived experiences and observations in clinical and para-clinical settings instead of being inculcated through formal curriculum or classroom teaching. For instance, clinical acumen, communication skills and bedside manners are learnt through role modelling and experiential learning in the course of clinical rotations. Likewise, one's attitudes, professional behaviours and inclinations are often also influenced by direct/indirect observations of the actions of others in the medical fraternity in various clinical and non-clinical settings.

Non-monthly regimens like treat-and-extend (T&E) have become popular due to their effectiveness in clinical practice. T&E regimens attempt to limit the burden of visits and treatments by allowing progressively longer treatment intervals, but in so doing, are potentially associated with the expense of treating quiescent disease.

Recent research in neuroscience has emphasized the relevance of XAI in studying cognition. This scoping review aims to identify and analyze various XAI methods used to study the mechanisms and features of cognitive function and dysfunction.

We aim to determine whether sleep duration, OSA parameters, or nocturnal hypoxemia is associated with a greater cognitive decline after stroke.
Methods: We prospectively followed-up patients with acute TIA/mild stroke [National Institute Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) < 7] who underwent baseline sleep questionnaire [Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)], and serial cognitive assessments [Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) 5-min, Stroop Test] at baseline and one-year.
Background: To compare the visual and anatomical outcomes of pneumatic displacement (PD) combined with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy versus anti-VEGF monotherapy in treatment-naive eyes with submacular haemorrhage (SMH) secondary to neovascular age-related macular degeneration and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy.
Methods: In a retrospective comparative interventional study of 57 eyes, the changes in logMAR visual acuity (VA), and SMH height and area at baseline at months 1, 3 and 12 were compared between the PD and non-PD groups.
Results: There was no significant difference in mean VA in the PD versus non-PD group at month 12 (1.
Background: As a disease characterized by chronic neutrophilic inflammation, various sputum biomarkers have been investigated in the association with the severity and prognosis of bronchiectasis. However, there is lack of data on the association between sputum interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels at clinical stable state and the clinical, spirometric and blood inflammatory parameters, as well as prognostic scores. The purpose of the study is to assess the association between sputum IL-1β, IL-8 and TNF-α levels at clinical stable state and various clinical and laboratory parameters in bronchiectasis.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of frailty on overall mortality and 90-day functional outcomes in SICH.
Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 1223 patients diagnosed with SICH from January 2014 to December 2020.
Background: Although bronchiectasis has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular disease, there is limited evidence of an association with subclinical atherosclerosis, especially carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT).
Methods: This prospective study compared CIMT among patients with and without bronchiectasis, and among bronchiectatic patients classified according to disease severity using the FACED score. The study was carried out at a major regional hospital and tertiary respiratory referral centre in Hong Kong.
Subspecialty consultations are becoming highly prevalent in hospital medicine, due to an ageing population with multimorbid conditions and increasingly complex care needs, as well as medicolegal fears that lead to widespread defensive medical practices. Although timely subspecialty consultations in the appropriate clinical context have been found to improve clinical outcomes, there remains a significant proportion of specialty referrals in hospital medicine which are inappropriate, excessive, or do not add value to patient care. In this article, we sought to provide an overview of the common problems pertaining to excessive quantity and suboptimal quality of inpatient subspecialty consultations made in real-world practice and highlight their implications for healthcare financing and patient care.

Objectives: This study examined the incidence of CVD and mortality in Malaysia and the Philippines and estimated the population-level risks attributable to common risk factors for each outcome.
Introduction: Advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of vision loss. Therefore, there is interest in precursor lesions that may predict or prevent the onset of advanced AMD. One such lesion is a shallow separation of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and Bruch's membrane (BM), which is described by various terms, including double-layer sign (DLS).

For the health system to run more efficiently, patients should be appropriately sited according to their medical needs. In Singapore, community hospitals serve as an intermediate inpatient facility managing patients with sub-acute and rehabilitation care needs.

While several cytotoxic agents have demonstrated efficacy against HGG, drug sensitivity testing platforms to aid in therapy selection are lacking. Patient-derived organoids (PDOs) have been shown to faithfully preserve the biological characteristics of several cancer types including HGG, and coupled with the experimental-analytical hybrid platform Quadratic Phenotypic Optimization Platform (QPOP) which evaluates therapeutic sensitivity at a patient-specific level, may aid as a tool for personalized medical decisions to improve treatment outcomes for HGG patients.

Many radiological markers have been studied as predictive biomarkers for patient outcomes in AIS. This study seeks to determine which clinico-radiological factors are associated with outcomes of interest to aid selection of patients for EVT for LVO AIS.
