Anaerobic digestion (AD) produces useful biogas and waste streams with high levels of dissolved methane (CH) and ammonium (NH), among other nutrients. Membrane biofilm reactors (MBfRs), which support dissolved methane oxidation in the same reactor as simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (ME-SND), are a potential bubble-less treatment method. Here, we demonstrate ME-SND taking place in single-stage, AD digestate liquid-fed MBfRs, where oxygen (O) and supplemental CH were delivered via pressurized membranes.

Nanostructured Au films fabricated by the assembling of nanoparticles produced in the gas phase have shown properties suitable for neuromorphic computing applications: they are characterized by a non-linear and non-local electrical behavior, featuring switches of the electric resistance whose activation is typically triggered by an applied voltage over a certain threshold. These systems can be considered as complex networks of metallic nanojunctions where thermal effects at the nanoscale cause the continuous rearrangement of regions with low and high electrical resistance. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the electrical properties of this nano granular system, we developed a model based on a large three dimensional regular resistor network with non-linear conduction mechanisms and stochastic updates of conductances.

Methanotrophs, which help regulate atmospheric levels of methane, are active in diverse natural and man-made environments. This range of habitats and the feast-famine cycles seen by many environmental methanotrophs suggest that methanotrophs dynamically mediate rates of methane oxidation. Global methane budgets require ways to account for this variability in time and space.

Methanotrophic microorganisms are characterized by their ability to oxidize methane. Globally they have a significant impact on methane emissions by attenuating net methane fluxes to the atmosphere in natural and engineered systems, though the populations are dynamic in their activity level in soils and waters. Methanotrophs oxidize methane using methane monooxygenase (MMO) enzymes, and selected subunit genes of the most common MMOs, specifically and , are used as biomarkers for the presence and abundance of populations of bacterial methanotrophs.

The gross morphology of soft coral surface sclerites has been studied for taxonomic purposes for over a century. In contrast, sclerites located deep in the core of colonies have not received attention. Some soft coral groups develop massive colonies, in these organisms tissue depth can limit light penetration and circulation of internal fluids affecting the physiology of coral tissues and their symbiotic algae; such conditions have the potential to create contrasting calcifying conditions.

Light-enhanced calcification is a general characteristic of zooxanthellate corals, suggesting a link between calcification by the coral and photosynthesis by the zooxanthellae, but the relationship between zooxanthellae and coral hosts during this process has not been elucidated. We hypothesized that the effects of tissue injury on the coral fragments used in experiments studying calcification might obscure that link. To detect the effects of tissue injury on light-enhanced calcification, we measured calcification rates (sclerite formation) in the soft coral Cladiella sp.

Coral reef degradation resulting from nutrient enrichment of coastal waters is of increasing global concern. Although effects of nutrients on coral reef organisms have been demonstrated in the laboratory, there is little direct evidence of nutrient effects on coral reef biota in situ. The ENCORE experiment investigated responses of coral reef organisms and processes to controlled additions of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (N) and/or phosphorus (P) on an offshore reef (One Tree Island) at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.
