Article Synopsis
  • - Researchers explored how negative emotional memories are processed while we sleep, focusing on whether this memory reprocessing changes throughout the night, particularly during specific sleep cycles.
  • - They found that the second sleep cycle after learning negative memories is the most critical period for this memory reprocessing, with slow oscillations and spindle activity supporting this process.
  • - An intervention using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to disrupt the identified SO-spindle coupling showed a significant decrease in the ability to recognize negative emotional memories, highlighting potential implications for treating psychiatric conditions related to emotional memory issues.

Background: Different from the very early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, burnout and chronic mental health problems among health care workers (HCWs) has become a challenge. Research is lacking on the relationship between burnout, stress, emotional distress and sleep quality.

Methods: The Chinese center has been involved in the Cope-Corona project since the second survey (T2).

Background: Chronic schizophrenia is significantly influenced by negative symptoms, with several known contributors to secondary negative symptoms. However, the impact of these factors and negative symptoms on social functioning warrants further exploration.

Methods: We assessed the clinical symptoms, antipsychotic adverse reactions, and social functioning of 283 hospitalized patients with chronic schizophrenia using various standardized interviews and scales.

Modern people generally suffer from α-linolenic acid (ALA) deficiency, since most staple food oils are low in ALA content. Thus, the enhancement of ALA in staple oil crops is of importance. In this study, the and coding regions from the ALA-king species were fused using a newly designed double linker LP4-2A, driven by a seed-specific promoter P, and engineered into a rapeseed elite cultivar ZS10 with canola quality background.

Introduction: The lateral habenula (LHb) is a promising deep brain stimulation (DBS) target for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). However, the optimal surgical trajectory and its safety of LHb DBS are lacking.

Methods: We reported surgical trajectories for the LHb in six TRD patients treated with DBS at the General Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army between April 2021 and May 2022.

Background: Research is lacking on the long-term influence of workplace factors on the mental health of health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: We distributed two online surveys to health care workers between May and October 2020 (T1) and between February and April 2021 (T2). Perceived stress, coronavirus-related risks, and workplace factors were measured self-report questionnaires at both time points.

Background: Psychomotor retardation (PMR) is frequently noted as a characteristic feature of major depressive disorder (MDD). In patients with depression, it is characterized by retardation of speech, emotion, thinking, and cognition. This study explored the activation pattern of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during the finger-tapping task (FTT) in subjects with MDD, aiming to provide additional understanding on the connection between PMR and PFC activation pattern in depression through the use of near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS).

Social interaction plays an essential role in species survival for socialized animals. Previous studies have shown that a lack of social interaction such as social isolation, especially in the early-life phase, increases the risk of developing mental diseases in adulthood. Chronic social stress alters blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity and increases peripheral cytokines to infiltrate the brain, which is linked to the development of depressive-like behaviors in mice, suggesting that BBB function is crucial in environmental stimuli-driven mood disorders via increased neuroinflammation in the brain.

The long-term physical and mental sequelae of COVID-19 are a growing public health concern, yet there is considerable uncertainty about their prevalence, persistence and predictors. We conducted a comprehensive, up-to-date meta-analysis of survivors' health consequences and sequelae for COVID-19. PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library were searched through Sep 30th, 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • * A systematic review identified 283 studies involving nearly 949,000 individuals, revealing that the prevalence of these mental health symptoms varied widely across different groups, with significant rates found in both survivors of infections and the general public.
  • * Factors contributing to higher prevalence of mental health symptoms included being female and the progression of time during the COVID-19 pandemic, with mental health issues tending to rise for many while decreasing for infected patients.

Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and tic disorders (TDs) are closely related and considered to etiologically overlap. Both disorders are characterized by repetitive behaviors. TD and OCD often co-occur.

Article Synopsis
  • Respiratory infections like SARS, H1N1, and COVID-19 have posed significant threats to global health, leading to unclear recommendations regarding facemask usage due to lack of solid evidence on their effectiveness.
  • A meta-analysis of 21,341 records included 8 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 78 studies focusing on facemask efficacy and public perception, revealing that facemasks can notably reduce infection risk, especially when used for longer than two weeks.
  • The analysis showed that while 71% of participants believe facemasks are effective and 68% intend to wear them, actual usage was lower at 54%, with regional differences in attitudes influenced by cultural factors and public health policies.

Article Synopsis
  • Infectious diseases like COVID-19 cause significant public fear and can lead to stigma and discrimination against affected groups.
  • A meta-analysis of 50 studies revealed an overall stigma prevalence of 34%, with higher rates among patients (38%), community members (36%), and healthcare workers (30%).
  • Stigma was more prevalent in low- and middle-income countries (37%) compared to high-income countries (27%), and individuals with lower education levels experienced higher stigma at 47% versus 33% for those with higher education, underscoring the need for comprehensive public health interventions.

Background And Objectives: The adverse impact of chronic methamphetamine (MA) use on cognitive function has been described in previous studies, but limited evidence is available for abstinent users from prospective longitudinal studies. The aim of the present study was to assess cognitive function of varying abstinent duration.

Methods: This prospective longitudinal study was conducted with baseline and four follow-up interviews every 6 months over 2 years in 358 MA users in Guangdong province, China.

Background: Preventing relapse of schizophrenic patients is really a challenge. The present study sought to provide more explicit evidence and factors of different grades and weights by a series of step-by-step analysis through test, logistic regression analysis and decision-tree model. The results of this study may contribute to controlling relapse of schizophrenic patients.

To investigate effects of agomelatine and mirtazapine on sleep disturbances in patients with major depressive disorder. A total of 30 depressed patients with sleep disturbances, 27 of which completed the study, took agomelatine or mirtazapine for 8 weeks. Subjective scales were administered, and polysomnography was performed at baseline and at the end of week 1 and 8.

Study Objectives: Objective sleep duration has been linked to insomnia severity. However, cognitive functions of people with insomnia with different sleep durations have been seldom addressed. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has an important role in cognitive function and has been linked to clinical insomnia recently.

Abnormal functional brain connectivity could be considered an endophenotype of psychosis in schizophrenia. Identifying candidate endophenotypes may serve as a tool for elucidating its biological and neural mechanisms. The present study investigated the similarities and differences of features of brain network connectivity between patients and their first-degree relatives.

Previous studies suggested that electroconvulsive therapy can influence regional metabolism and dopamine signaling, thereby alleviating symptoms of schizophrenia. It remains unclear what patients may benefit more from the treatment. The present study sought to identify biomarkers that predict the electroconvulsive therapy response in individual patients.
