In this report, we evaluate the present state of the rapidly emerging field of monolayer-protected cluster (MPC) molecules with regard to their synthesis and monolayer functionalization, their core and monolayer structure, their composition, and their properties. Finally, we canvass some of the important remaining research opportunities involving MPCs.

Subspecialty training and academic careers.

Baillieres Best Pract Res Clin Obstet Gynaecol

September 1999

Subspecialty training in obstetrics and gynaecology in the UK was formulated following a report published in 1982 by a working party established by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. One of the aims of subspecialization was to improve knowledge, practice, teaching and research. The three major subspecialties were maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive medicine and gynaecological oncology.

Here an analysis is presented of the roles of recombination and mutation in shaping previously determined haplotype variation in 9.7 kb of genomic DNA sequence from the human lipoprotein lipase gene (LPL), scored in 71 individuals from three populations: 24 African Americans, 24 Finns, and 23 non-Hispanic whites. Recombination and gene-conversion events inferred from data on 88 haplotypes that were defined by 69 variable sites were tested.

Phylogenetic relationships among Greek populations of the chub, Leuciscus cephalus, were investigated using 600 bp of the cytochrome b gene. The aim of this study was to test the assumption that the main difference in ichthyological composition between both sides of the Balkan Peninsula is directly linked to differences in the dispersion mechanisms used by fish in order to extend their distribution range. Phylogenetic and nested clade analyses clearly showed that populations in Greece are significantly differentiated.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the UK and Europe. The majority of female infections are asymptomatic and recognized sequelae include pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. Women with chlamydial infection who undergo uterine instrumentation are recognized to be at risk of ascending infection.

Attempts to relate estimates of regional F to gene flow and drift via Wright's (1931) equation F ≈ 1/ (4Nm + 1) are often inappropriate because most natural sets of populations probably are not at equilibrium (McCauley 1993), as assumed by the island model upon which the equation is based, or ineffective because the influences of gene flow and drift are confounded in the product Nm. Evaluations of the association between genetic (F ) and geographic distances separating all pairwise populations combinations in a region allows one to test for regional equilibrium, to evaluate the relative influences of gene flow and drift on population structure both within and between regions, and to visualize the behavior of the association across all degrees of geographic separation. Tests of the model using microsatellite data from 51 populations of eastern collared lizards (Crotaphytus collaris collaris) collected from four distinct geographical regions gave results highly consistent with predicted patterns of association based on regional differences in various historical and ecological factors that affect the amount of drift and gene flow.

The effect of injection-drug use on human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) env genetic evolution was examined in 15 seroconverting injection-drug users followed up for 4 years. After adjustment for non-drug-related independent variables significantly associated with genetic diversity (time since seroconversion and progressor status), injection frequency was positively and highly significantly associated with HIV-1 env genetic diversity (P=.003).

This report describes how the electrochemical double-layer capacitances of nanometer-sized alkanethiolate monolayer-protected Au clusters (MPCs) dissolved in electrolyte solution depend on the alkanethiolate chain length (C4 to C16). The double-layer capacitances of individual MPCs (C(CLU)) are sufficiently small (sub-attoFarad, aF) that their metal core potentials change by >0.1 V increments for single electron transfers at the electrode/solution interface.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of vaginal misoprostol and dinoprostone vaginal gel for induction of labour at term.

Design: A single-blind randomised comparative trial.

Setting: Induction and labour wards of a UK teaching hospital.

The availability of molecular and morphological markers in a parthenogenetically reproducing strain of Drosophila mercatorum allowed us to design an experiment in which we could obtain a sample of completely homozygous recombinant females from two different parental homozygous strains. The phenotypic values of body-size-related measures and bristle numbers (sternopleural and abdominal) were measured in females sampled from the parental, F1 and F2 generations. The DNA extracted from the F2 flies was scored for five Mendelian segregating loci through double stringency PCR.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of a regimen comprising mifepristone followed by a combination of the vaginal and oral administration of misoprostol for mid-trimester medical termination of pregnancy.

Design: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data in women undergoing mid-trimester medical termination of pregnancy.

Setting: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Scotland.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the micro-organism causing the most common sexually transmitted disease in the UK and Europe. The majority of female infections are asymptomatic and recognized sequelae include pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. Over 1200 sexually active women from two urban centres in the UK were questioned about awareness and knowledge of Chlamydia genito-urinary infection.

Haplotypes constructed from Y-chromosome markers were used to trace the origins of Native Americans. Our sample consisted of 2,198 males from 60 global populations, including 19 Native American and 15 indigenous North Asian groups. A set of 12 biallelic polymorphisms gave rise to 14 unique Y-chromosome haplotypes that were unevenly distributed among the populations.

The Central Highlands region in the central United States is a taxonomically diverse region with a high incidence of stream endemism. Based on the distributions of the diverse ichthyofauna in the region, a pre-Pleistocene pattern of diversity due to vicariant events has been proposed to explain high levels of endemism and species richness. We tested this hypothesis using crayfish phylogenies and distributional patterns for species distributed in the Central Highlands region.

Maternal serum concentrations of inhibin-A, inhibin-B, activin-A, activin-AB, pro-alphaC-related inhibin forms, total follistatin, steroids and gonadotrophins were measured longitudinally in six normal singleton pregnancies. Maternal venous blood was collected randomly during a spontaneous follicular phase prior to donor insemination, at 5, 7, 9, 11, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36 weeks after the first missed menses and in the early puerperium. Steroid and gonadotrophin profiles conformed to previous reports.

A combination of the anti-progesterone mifepristone and gemeprost provides an effective non-surgical method for the induction of abortion at gestations up to 63 days, achieving complete abortion rates of over 95%. We report our experience with an alternate regimen, comprising a reduced dose of mifepristone in combination with vaginal misoprostol. A consecutive series of 2000 women requesting early medical abortion at gestations up to 63 days was studied retrospectively.

A range of stimuli have been used to determine the effect of S-salbutamol on contractile responses of human isolated bronchus. Significant augmentation of contraction was evident during responses to histamine or LTC4 but responses to EFS, methacholine, bradykinin and capsaicin were not influenced and allergic bronchospasm was significantly impaired by prior exposure to S-salbutamol. Since R-salbutamol relaxes human isolated bronchus, the capacity of S-salbutamol to enhance contractile responses to histamine or LTC4 cannot be attributed to activation of beta2-adrenoceptors.
