Determinants of compliance with outpatient examinations for infants at risk for retinopathy of prematurity.

Purpose: To assess the level and the determinants of compliance with outpatient retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) examination appointments at a tertiary academic center.

Methods: The medical records of babies scheduled for outpatient ROP examination between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022, were reviewed retrospectively. Data collected included appointments scheduled and attended, birth weight, gestational age, ROP staging at discharge, maternal ethnicity (self-identified), household type, proximity to hospital and median family income (US Census based on home zip codes).

A systematic review of cases of West African crystalline maculopathy.

Aim: West African crystalline maculopathy (WACM) is, reportedly, a rare condition whose aetiology remains unclear. This study aims to describe the epidemiology, summarizing the identified risk factors and clinical characteristics of cases of WACM, with the goal of highlighting presentation patterns and the clinical course of the condition.

Methods: A comprehensive PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, OMIM and Google scholar search of all articles written in English, and non-English language articles with abstract translated to English on WACM was carried out.

Orbital inflammatory disease secondary to epidemic keratoconjunctivitis in an adult patient: case report.

Orbital inflammatory disease, sequel to epidemic keratoconjunctivitis is an uncommon finding in adult patients. A 36-year-old male presented at the clinic with a 4-day history of left ocular pain and a one-month history of left eye redness and watering. Visual acuity in the eye was 6/5, with reduced red-color saturation and light brightness appreciation.

Collateral damage: the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the care of a patient with tuberculous neuroretinitis in Lagos, Nigeria.

Tuberculous neuroretinis, a relatively rare manifestation of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, is characterized by optic disc edema, peripapillary and macula swelling, with hard exudates forming a partial or complete 'macular star' While the disease may present a diagnostic challenge for Ophthalmologists, prognosis is usually good, with proper management. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has presented a healthcare delivery dilemma in many parts of the world, with poor accessibility to, and under-utilization of, important healthcare services by non-COVID-19-related cases. Herein is a report of a case of tuberculous neuroretinitis in Lagos, Nigeria, whose care was negatively impacted by the ongoing pandemic through the combined factors of the interruption of clinical services during the lockdown, patient avoidance of healthcare facilities and the absence of robust telehealth services.

Prevalence and causes of visual impairment among hearing impaired students in Lagos, Nigeria.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence and causes of visual impairment in hearing-impaired students in Lagos, Nigeria and to assess their level of ophthalmic care utilization.

Methods: Descriptive cross sectional study carried out in a primary school for hearing impaired students in Lagos, Nigeria. Socio-demographic characteristics, medical and ocular history were obtained.

Is primary open-angle glaucoma a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy?

Purpose: To compare the prevalences of diabetic retinopathy in diabetes mellitus patients, with and without primary open-angle glaucoma, with a view to determine if glaucoma is a risk factor for the development of diabetic retinopathy.

Methods: Cross-sectional, comparative study consisting of 86 diabetic patients with glaucoma matched with 86 diabetic patients without glaucoma. The two groups were matched by age, sex and duration of diabetes mellitus.
