- Neurons in the stellate ganglion (SG) are crucial for supplying sympathetic signals to the heart and other organs, and their behavior changes after a heart attack (myocardial infarction, MI).
- This study used specific tracing techniques and experimental models to analyze how MI affects the size and shape of cardiac sympathetic neurons, discovering that MI led to smaller cell bodies and shorter dendritic trees in these neurons on the side of the heart affected.
- Interestingly, while these structural changes occurred, MI did not alter the size or function of neurons projecting to brown adipose tissue (BAT), indicating a targeted response in cardiac neurons without affecting the overall pattern between the two neuron types.
