Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) presents distinct sex-specific differences in both symptom expression and treatment outcomes, with the underlying biological mechanisms still remain unclear. Epigenetic modifications, particularly histone acetylation, have been increasingly recognized as critical factors in the pathophysiology of PTSD. Valproic acid (VPA), a potent histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, has shown promise in modulating epigenetic responses and improving therapeutic outcomes is PTSD, though its effect may differ between sexes.

Tamoxifen has been shown to reduce glutamate release from presynaptic glutamatergic nerves and reverse tolerance to morphine-induced respiratory depression. Changes in glutamatergic neurotransmission in the central nervous system contribute to morphine tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal. This study, therefore, evaluated effects of tamoxifen on development of analgesic tolerance and dependence, and brain glutamate and glutamine levels in chronic morphine administration.

The composition of the human milk (HM) microbiota and, consequently, the microorganisms that are passed on to the infant through breastfeeding, can be influenced by various factors such as the mother's health and diet, gestational age, delivery mode, lactation stage, method of infant feeding, and geographical location. The aim of the Human Milk-Gest Study was to compare the microbiota of transient (postpartum 7-15 days) and mature HM (postpartum 45-90 days) of 44 mothers, and to investigate any potential changes associated with preterm birth, mode of delivery, and birth weight in relation to gestational age. The data were classified into five study groups: normal spontaneous delivery-term (NS-T) newborns, cesarean delivery-term (CS-T) newborns, preterm (PT) newborns (with a gestational age of less than 37 weeks), small for gestational age (SGA) newborns, and large for gestational age (LGA) newborns.

Printer toner particles (TPs) are a common, potentially hazardous substance, with an unclear toxicological impact on the respiratory mucosa. Most of the airways surface is covered by a ciliated respiratory mucosa, therefore appropriate tissue models of the respiratory epithelium with a high in vivo correlation are necessary for in vitro evaluation of airborne pollutants toxicology and the impact on the functional integrity. The aim of this study is the evaluation of TPs toxicology in a human primary cell-based air-liquid-interface (ALI) model of respiratory mucosa.

Fatty liver diseases are a major health threat across the western world, leading to cirrhosis and premature morbidity and mortality. Recently, a correlation between the base excision repair enzyme SMUG1 and metabolic homeostasis was identified. As the molecular mechanisms remain unknown, we exploited a SMUG1-knockout mouse model to gain insights into this association by characterizing the liver phenotype in young vs old SMUG1-null mice.

During transformation, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are characterized by reducing apoptosis of bone marrow (BM) precursors. Mouse models of high risk (HR)-MDS and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) post-MDS using mutant NRAS and overexpression of human BCL-2, known to be poor prognostic indicators of the human diseases, were created. We have reported the efficacy of the BCL-2 inhibitor, ABT-737, on the AML post-MDS model; here, we report that this BCL-2 inhibitor also significantly extended survival of the HR-MDS mouse model, with reductions of BM blasts and lineage negative/Sca1+/KIT+ (LSK) cells.
