Introduction: ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitors have exhibited promising activity against advanced ALK-rearranged NSCLC. However, co-occurring genetic alterations, such as CDKN2A/B or TP53, may negatively affect the efficacy of targeted therapies.

Methods: From December 2017 to December 2022, this study cohort analyzed next-generation sequencing data of 116 patients with metastatic ALK-rearranged NSCLC from five Latin American cancer centers.

Asparaginase therapy is a vital agent in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), with increasing evidence of its high importance in high-risk ALL populations. However, despite the clear clinical and biological benefits of asparaginase therapy, many patients experience toxicities. A well-known treatment-limiting toxicity is asparaginase-associated pancreatitis (AAP).

Miniature atomic scalar magnetometer for space based on the rubidium isotope Rb.

A miniature atomic scalar magnetometer based on the rubidium isotope Rb was developed for operation in space. The instrument design implements both and mode operation and leverages a novel microelectromechanical system (MEMS) fabricated vapor cell and a custom silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit. The vapor cell has a volume of only 1 mm so that it can be efficiently heated to its operating temperature by a specially designed, low-magnetic-field-generating resistive heater implemented in multiple metal layers of the transparent sapphire substrate of the SOS-CMOS chips.

Admissions Criteria as Predictors of Academic Performance in a Three-Year Pharmacy Program at a Historically Black Institution.

Objective: To determine the ability of University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Pharmacy's admissions criteria to predict students' academic performance in a 3-year pharmacy program and to analyze transferability to African-American students.

Methods: Statistical analyses were conducted on retrospective data for 174 students. Didactic and experiential scores were used as measures of academic performance.

Assessment of Communications-related Admissions Criteria in a Three-year Pharmacy Program.

Objective: To determine if there is a correlation between TOEFL and other admissions criteria that assess communications skills (ie, PCAT variables: verbal, reading, essay, and composite), interview, and observational scores and to evaluate TOEFL and these admissions criteria as predictors of academic performance.

Methods: Statistical analyses included two sample t tests, multiple regression and Pearson's correlations for parametric variables, and Mann-Whitney U for nonparametric variables, which were conducted on the retrospective data of 162 students, 57 of whom were foreign-born.

Results: The multiple regression model of the other admissions criteria on TOEFL was significant.

We present a high-voltage CMOS neural-interface chip for a multichannel vestibular prosthesis (MVP) that measures head motion and modulates vestibular nerve activity to restore vision- and posture-stabilizing reflexes. This application specific integrated circuit neural interface (ASIC-NI) chip was designed to work with a commercially available microcontroller, which controls the ASIC-NI via a fast parallel interface to deliver biphasic stimulation pulses with 9-bit programmable current amplitude via 16 stimulation channels. As part of a continuing effort to design and synthesize highly selective muscarinic agonists for different muscarinic receptor subtypes, several tetra(ethylene glycol)(3-methoxy-1,2,5-thiadiazol-4-yl) [3-(1-methyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyrid-3-yl)-1,2,5-thiadiazol-4-yl] ether (1) analogues were prepared and characterized. Different analogues were synthesized having hydrophilic spacers of di-, tri-, tetra-, penta(ethylene glycol) and tri(propylene glycol) separating the 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine ring from the terminal heterocycle, which was either a 1,2,5-thiadiazole or 1,2,4-thiadiazole ring. Sun protection policies in Miami-Dade County public schools: opportunities for skin cancer prevention.

Childhood exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and a history of sunburns are risk factors for skin cancer. Because children spend time outdoors when they are at school, school sun protection policies are an important health issue, particularly in areas of the country with year-round warm and sunny climates, such as Florida. To better understand the sun protection policies and practices in South Florida schools, a sample (n = 51) of elementary and middle schools in Miami-Dade County public schools were surveyed as part of a CDC-funded cancer control program at the University of Miami.

Phobic fear of flying in aircrews: epidemiological aspects and comorbidity.

Background: Phobic fear of flying may affect aircrew members during any phase of their flying careers. Symptoms are beyond voluntary control and may lead patients to avoid flying and seek medical advice.

Methods: Of 1101 psychiatric files from our institute for 1985-2002, 150 represented cases of fliers who suffered from phobic fear of flying.

Influence of ovarian ornithine decarboxylase in folliculogenesis and luteinization.

LH plays a relevant role in folliculogenesis, ovulation, and luteinization. Although ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), a key enzyme in polyamine biosynthesis, is a target of LH in the ovary, the functional significance of ODC induction has remained elusive. Our study reveals that the blockade of the induction of ovarian ODC by means of the specific inhibitor alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) affects folliculogenesis and luteinization.

Influence of different neural systems on the secretion of sex hormones in potassium deficient mice.

The influence of different neural systems that modulate GnRH secretion by hypothalamic neurons was investigated in mice exposed to hypokalemic conditions, in which the pulsatile release of GnRH has been shown to be altered and associated with a significant decrease of plasma sex steroids. Our results demonstrate that the potentiation of the inhibitory pathways mediated by opiates and GABA may be implicated in the decrease of sex hormones secretion produced by hypokalemia since treatment with higher doses of naloxone or flumazenil are required to restore progesterone or testosterone levels in potassium deficient mice. The combination treatment of prazoxin and naloxone suggests that the inhibitory action of opiates take place through its action on noradrenergic neurons.

The preovulatory rise of ovarian ornithine decarboxylase is required for progesterone secretion by the corpus luteum.

Ovarian progesterone secretion during the diestrus stage of the estrous cycle is produced by luteal cells derived from granulosa and thecal cells after the differentiation process that follows ovulation. Our results show that blockade of the preovulatory rise of ovarian ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), a key enzyme in polyamine biosynthesis, by treatment with the specific inhibitor alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) leads to a significant decrease in the ovarian progesterone content and a dramatic fall in the plasma levels of this hormone during the following diestrus. The same inhibition was produced in spite of the fact that both luteinizing and follicle stimulating hormones were given concomitantly with DFMO.

Renal transplantation has been a usual medical practice in developed countries for several decades. A large number of studies report the excellent results obtained with such a practice. The survival of the graft, although able to be improved, is excellent and gives a great deal of hope to patients with renal insufficiency.

Aminoglutethimide, a steroidogenesis inhibitor, abolishes hormonal induction of ornithine decarboxylase in steroidogenic tissues: evidence for its role as cAMP-dependent protein kinase inhibitor.

Aminoglutethimide (AMG), a potent inhibitor of steroidogenesis used in the treatment of breast cancer and some adrenal pathologies, abolished the induction of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) elicited by peptide hormones and by dibutyryl-cAMP in steroidogenic tissues. This effect seems to be related to an inhibition of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (IC50 = 287 microM) rather than blockade of the steroidogenic pathway. This inhibition may explain some of the effects observed in AMG treatment which cannot be ascribed to its direct effect on the cytochrome P450scc complex or aromatase.

Postnatal exposure to androgens alters renal ornithine decarboxylase ontogeny and abolishes renal sexual dimorphism in mice.

The mouse kidney presents marked sexual dimorphism, manifested not only in renal size but also in the subcellular structure and enzyme activity. Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), a key enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of polyamines, is induced in the kidney by androgens, and its activity is higher in the kidney of male mice. The renal differences between male and female mice are not manifested during the first weeks of life and start to be expressed after weaning, simultaneously with the increase in plasma testosterone concentration.

Hypokalemia alters sex hormone and gonadotropin levels: evidence that FSH may be required for luteinization.

Hypokalemia produced different effects on steroid sex hormone concentrations in plasma and ovary in the mouse. Estradiol levels were slightly increased, whereas circulating progesterone was markedly decreased in all estrous periods. The preovulatory surge of gonadotropins and the secondary surge of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) at estrus were also decreased, but basal levels of both gonadotropins were unaffected.

Cytomegalovirus preemptive therapy with ganciclovir in renal transplant patients treated with OKT3.

In an attempt to decrease the prevalence and severity of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease, preemptive therapy with ganciclovir was administered to all renal transplant patients treated with OKT3 between February 1993 and December 1994 (26 patients). The results were compared with those of a historical group treated with OKT3 but not with ganciclovir (29 patients). Both groups were similar in age, sex, number of previous transplants, number of rejections, serological status of donor and recipient and OKT3 dose.
