Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) is a procedure consisting of short cycles of ischemia applied in a limb that activates endogenous protection in distant organs, such as the brain. Despite the promising outcomes of RIC, the biochemical factors governing inter-organ communication remain largely unexplored, particularly in humans. A pilot study on 20 healthy humans was performed to identify potential circulating biochemical factors involved in RIC signalling.

  • Eco-anxiety is a growing global concern related to environmental disasters, and the Hogg Eco-Anxiety Scale (HEAS) was translated into Spanish as HEAS-SP to address this issue in Spanish-speaking populations.
  • The validation of the HEAS-SP involved large samples from Argentina and Spain, confirming its reliability and consistency across different demographic groups.
  • Results indicated that eco-anxiety varies by gender and age, with Spanish participants reporting higher emotional responses and younger individuals showing increased levels of eco-anxiety.

The ongoing wars in many regions-such as the conflict between Israel and Hamas-as well as the effects of war on communities, social services, and mental health are covered in this special editorial. This article emphasizes the need for international efforts to promote peace, offer humanitarian aid, and address the mental health challenges faced by individuals and communities affected by war and violence.

Background: Worsening environmental conditions may amplify people's emotional responses to an environmental crisis (eco-anxiety). In Portugal, young people seem to be especially concerned about climate change. However, this phenomenon needs to be interpreted using accurate instruments.

Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) have recently emerged as promising therapeutic approaches for neuropathic pain (NP). We evaluated the effects of oral treatment with the SPM Maresin 1 (MaR1) on behavioral pain responses and spinal neuroinflammation in male and female C57BL/6J mice with spared nerve injury (SNI)-induced NP. MaR1, or vehicle, was administered once daily, on post-surgical days 3 to 5, by voluntary oral intake.

  • NOX2 has been linked to neuropathic pain (NP) through its role in neuroinflammation, and this study examined the effects of a NOX2 inhibitor on NP in male and female mice.
  • Early treatment with the NOX2-selective inhibitor GSK2795039 reduced pain hypersensitivity and microglial activation in both sexes.
  • While the treatment affected anxiety-like behaviors and certain inflammatory markers differently in males and females, it suggests that targeting NOX2 could be a viable strategy for managing NP, particularly with benefits noted for females.

  • Cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLT) are inflammatory mediators that have not been widely studied in COVID-19, but this study investigates their relationship with disease severity and prognostic value in hospitalized patients.
  • * Urinary CysLT (U-CysLT) levels were monitored in COVID-19 patients of varying severity, with significant increases observed particularly in critically ill patients on veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) and those with hypertension.
  • * The study found that U-CysLT levels correlated with longer ICU stays and had a promising ability to predict 30-day mortality, indicating their potential as prognostic tools and therapeutic targets in severe COVID-19 cases.*

The number of people forcibly displaced worldwide is increasing. It is an imperative challenge to provide mental health training for non-health professionals and volunteers who work with those vulnerable populations. The objective is to identify mental health training programs for non-health professionals and volunteers, without mental health training, to work with asylum seekers or refugees in any context.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored links between lifestyle factors and frailty in 160 older adults (ages 65-80) in Portugal, discovering that 43% were pre-frail and 18% were frail, with most frail individuals showing some cognitive decline.
  • - Frailty was more common in women, emphasizing the need for interventions targeting physical activity, cognitive engagement, and healthy eating to help reverse pre-frailty.
  • - A healthy lifestyle is crucial for older adults, focusing on good sleep, nutrition, and managing health conditions like diabetes and blood pressure to reduce frailty risks.

Objective: The aim of the proposed scoping review is to identify training programs in multicultural competencies for health care staff and health students in professional and academic settings.

Introduction: Cultural competence training for health care professionals is an imperative challenge in today's culturally diverse societies to ensure that all people receive equitable and effective health care, particularly those from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Inclusion Criteria: This scoping review will consider literature with adult participants aged ≥ 18 years, health care staff, and health students who may have received or are receiving multicultural competencies training.

Unlabelled: Early detection of frailty may prevent or delay adverse health outcomes in community-dwelling older adults. In Portugal, there are currently no valid multidimensional frailty screening tools. SUNFRAIL is a user-friendly multidimensional tool for frailty screening that can be used in primary care.

Neuropathic pain (NP) is a chronic condition that results from a lesion or disease of the nervous system, greatly impacting patients' quality of life. Current pharmacotherapy options deliver inadequate and/or insufficient responses and thus a significant unmet clinical need remains for alternative treatments in NP. Neuroinflammation, oxidative stress and their reciprocal relationship are critically involved in NP pathophysiology.

Drug administration to experimental rodents is often invasive and stressful, thus reducing animal welfare and potentially confounding experimental results. Methods of oral drug delivery in which rodents cooperate voluntarily minimize stress, pain and morbidity. We herein describe a method for oral administration through voluntary intake of strawberry jam, developed for C57BL/6J mice.

There is a growing need to implement and evaluate the technological solutions that allow the early detection of age-related frailty and enable assessment of the predictive values of frailty components. The broad use of these solutions may ensure an efficient and sustainable response of health and social care systems to the challenges related to demographic aging. In this paper, we present the protocol of the ModulEn study that aims to develop and validate a predictive model for frailty.
