Decompressive craniectomy (DC) has been the main surgical treatment of refractory high intracranial pressure (ICP) in traumatic brain injury (TBI) for decades. Basal cisternostomy emerged as a novel option in brain trauma, with results still unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing cisternostomy added to conventional DC versus DC alone for the treatment of TBI.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of death worldwide. TB represents a serious public health threat, and it is characterized by high transmission rates, prevalence in impoverished regions, and high co-infection rates with HIV. Moreover, the serious side effects of long-term treatment that decrease patient adherence, and the emergence of multi-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causing agent of TBs, pose several challenges for its eradication.

Dammed rivers lose its natural characteristics of the flow cycle and becomes controlled by the energy demands of the hydroelectric plants. With the connection of the energy-producing plants to a central station in Brazil the situation is aggravated since demands in different regions of the country affect the water flow. Using downstream flow data from the Tucuruí dam over a 50-year period, we tested whether the variation in water flow has changed.

The aim was to identify the predominant variables in the differentiation of meat quality of cattle submitted to surgical castration, immunocastration, or non-castration and finished in a tropical pasture. Thirty-nine crossbred cattle were used and distributed in three treatments: i) surgical castration; ii) immunocastration; and iii) non-castration, with an initial mean age of 14.06±0.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of age at weaning of calves on non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and reproductive parameters of beef cows. Animals (n = 65) were randomly assigned to three treatments after calving: hyper-early weaning (W30) at 32 ± 0.89 days, early weaning (W75) at 77 ± 0.

The current COVID-19 pandemic demands massive testing by Real-time RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction), which is considered the gold standard diagnostic test for the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, the virus continues to evolve with mutations that lead to phenotypic alterations as higher transmissibility, pathogenicity or vaccine evasion. Another big issue are mutations in the annealing sites of primers and probes of RT-PCR diagnostic kits leading to false-negative results.

Improper disposal of copper mining wastes can threaten the ecosystem and human health due to the high levels of potentially toxic elements released into the environment. The objective of this study was to determine the properties of Cu mining wastes generated in the eastern Amazon and their potential risks to environment and human health. Samples of forest soil and artisanal/industrial Cu mining wastes were collected and subjected to characterization of properties and pseudo-total concentrations of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, and Zn, in addition to chemical fractionation of Cu.

Neospora caninum causes heavy losses related to abortions in bovine cattle. This parasite developed a complex defense redox system, composed of enzymes as glutathione reductase (GR). Methylene blue (MB) impairs the activity of recombinant form of Plasmodium GR and inhibits the parasite proliferation in vivo and in vitro.

Assessment of target druggability guided by search and characterization of hot spots is a pivotal step in early stages of drug-discovery. The raw output of FTMap provides the data to perform this task, but it relies on manual intervention to properly combine different sets of consensus sites, therefore allowing identification of hot spots and evaluation of strength, shape and distance among them. Thus, the user's previous experience on the target and the software has a direct impact on how data generated by FTMap server can be explored.

The purpose of this research was to identify, through a systematic review of the literature, the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities of the production and commercialization of cultured meat, as well as to analyze the challenges to be faced by this new food biotechnology. For this, we analyzed 194 manuscripts published in the Scopus and Web of Science databases that dealt with cultured meat under the perspective of cellular agriculture, employing several nomenclatures. The results indicate that there is still no consensus in the literature about the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities of cultured meat, which constitutes an emerging, multifaceted, and encouraging field of study, and a series of inferences have been made that provide insights into the knowledge analyzed.

Mineral exploration of copper (Cu) in the Amazon has significantly impacted the environment, leading to contamination of large areas that require remediation. Tropical tree species that can immobilize metals and restore plant cover should be selected for phytoremediation programs. The phytoremediation behavior of Khaya ivorensis and Cedrela fissilis was studied in Cu contaminated soil (60, 200, 400, and 600 mg kg).

Aims: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is often accompanied by pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory processes. Lifestyle modification (LiSM) may act as primary treatment for these processes. This study aimed to elucidate influencing factors on changes of malondialdehyde (MDA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations after a LiSM intervention.

Classical trajectories have been integrated to study the O + ClO reaction, both reactive and vibrational energy transfer processes, for the range of temperatures 100 ≤ T/K ≤ 500 using momentum Gaussian binning. The employed potential energy surface is the recently proposed single-sheeted double many-body expansion potential energy surface for the (2)A" ground-state of ClO2 based on multireference ab initio data. A capture-type regime with a room-temperature rate constant of (17.

A global single-sheeted double many-body expansion potential energy surface is reported for the ground electronic state of ClO2. The potential energy surface is obtained by fitting 3200 energy points that map all atom-diatom dissociation channels as well as all relevant stationary points, including the well-known OClO and ClOO structures. The ab initio calculations are obtained at the multireference configuration interaction level of theory, employing the cc-pVXZ (X = D, T) Dunning basis sets, and then extrapolated to the complete basis set limit with the generalized uniform singlet- and triplet-pair protocol.

This report describes the development and validation of a simple, rapid, and efficient method in which solid-phase extraction followed by analysis in a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector (SPE-GC-ECD) is used for the simultaneous determination of dicofol, dieldrin, endosulfan, and permethrin in rat adipose tissue. This study targeted pesticides for which controversies exist regarding the harm that they may cause to humans, such as endocrine disruption or cancer, and that have also been found in recent years in vegetables consumed by the Brazilian population. The analytical procedure was optimised for SPE extraction and for GC-ECD conditions.

Low-grade chronic systemic inflammation is often associated with chronic non-communicable diseases, and its most frequently used marker, the C-reactive protein (CRP), has become an identifier of such diseases as well as an independent predictor for cardiovascular disorders and mortality. CRP is produced in response to pro-inflammatory signaling and to individual and behavioral factors, leading to pathological states. The aim of this study was to rank the predicting factors of high CRP concentrations in free-living adults from a community-based sample.

Objective: We describe a new technique for removing the distal fragments of broken intramedullary femoral nails without disturbing the nonunion site.

Methods: This technique involves the application of an AO distractor prior to the removal of the nail fragments, with subsequent removal of the proximal nail fragment in an anterograde fashion and removal of the distal fragment through a medial parapatellar approach. Impaction of the fracture site is then performed with a nail that is broader than the remaining fragmented material.
