Wound infection treatment with antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) is still not a reality, due to the loss of activity . Unlike the conventional strategy of encapsulating AMPs on nanoparticles (NPs) leaving activity dependent on the release profile, this work explores AMP grafting to poly(D,L-lactide--glycolide)-polyethylene glycol NPs (PLGA-PEG NPs), whereby AMP exposition, infection targeting and immediate action are promoted. NPs are functionalized with MSI-78(4-20), an equipotent and more selective derivative of MSI-78, grafted through a thiol-maleimide (Mal) Michael addition.

Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins belonging to the Leguminosae family. In this family stand out proteins extracted from species belonging to Diocleinae subtribe, which includes, for example, the seed lectin from Dioclea violacea (DVL) and the jack bean lectin Concanavalin A (ConA). Here, we report the photosynthesis of silver/silver chloride nanoparticles (NPs) assisted by ConA and DVL.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are one of the most prescribed drugs around the world. PPIs induce microbiota modulation such as obesity both in humans and in animal models. However, since PPIs can induce microbiota modulation despite the absence of a high-fat diet or weight gain, it is an interesting model to correlate microbiota modulation with the establishment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Food supplement authentication is an important concern worldwide due to the ascending consumption related to health benefits and its lack of effective regulation in underdeveloped countries, making it a target of fraudulent activities. In this context, this study evaluated fish oil supplements by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS) to obtain fingerprints, which were used to build predictive models for automated authentication of the most popular products sold in Brazil. The authentication process relied on a one-class classifier model using data-driven soft independent modeling of class analogy (DD-SIMCA).

Article Synopsis
  • Carbapenems are crucial last-resort antibiotics for treating infections from multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, but resistance through mechanisms like OprD loss and carbapenemases is a growing global concern.
  • A study in Brazil tested the effectiveness of three phenotypic tests—Carba NP, Blue Carba, and mCIM/eCIM—to detect carbapenemase-producing Pseudomonas species, using 127 clinical isolates.
  • Results showed that Carba NP had the highest sensitivity and successfully differentiated between carbapenemases types, while Blue Carba struggled with class B detection, highlighting the need for improved and more reliable resistance detection methods.

Characterized by the incomplete development of the germinal epithelium of the seminiferous tubules, Testicular hypoplasia (TH) leads to decreased sperm concentration, increased morphological changes in sperm and azoospermia. Economic losses resulting from the disposal of affected bulls reduce the efficiency of meat production systems. A genome-wide association study and functional analysis were performed to identify genomic windows and the underlying positional candidate genes associated with TH in Nellore cattle.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) due to fetal exposure to glucocorticoid excess results in metabolic inflexibility and hepatic steatosis upon nutritional stress during adulthood. We previously demonstrated that rats born to dexamethasone (DEX)-treated mothers developed hepatic steatosis when exposed to 10% fructose solution during adult life. Persistent triacylglyceride (TAG) accumulation in the liver, in turn, is a feature of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which serves as a risk factor for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different dental tissue thickness on the measurement of oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels in high (HP) and low (LP) blood perfusion by comparing the values obtained from two different pulse oximeters (POs) - BCI and Sense 10. Thirty freshly extracted human teeth had their crowns interposed between the POs and an optical simulator, which emulated the SpO2 and heart beats per minute (bpm) at HP (100% SpO2/75 bpm) and LP (86% SpO2/75 bpm) modes. Afterwards, the palatine/lingual surfaces of the dental crowns were worn with diamond drills.
